Mrs. Velma J. Hines, 95, of West Madison Avenue, Johnstown, New York, died Wednesday, August 28, 2013, at St. Mary’s Healthcare in Amsterdam.
Born on November 11, 1917, in Jamaica, Long Island, N.Y., she was the daughter of Johannis A. Jansson and Karin Rahlen Jansson. Mrs. Hines was a graduate of Sharon Springs High School, class of 1934. She resided in Canajoharie and Amsterdam most of her life, moving to Gloversville in 1999 and then to Johnstown.
During World War II Mrs. Hines worked for Beech-Nut in Canajoharie. She then worked for Miller’s Apparel Shop and later had her own Seamstress Shop above the pharmacy in town.
She was a member of the Canajoharie Reformed Church.
On June 15, 1940, at the Canajoharie Reformed Church, Velma was married to Edward C. Hines. He preceded her in death on June 29, 2002. She was also predeceased by three sisters, Anna Jansson, Norma Crapser and Joyce Holmes.
Mrs. Hines is survived by her son, James and Victoria Hines of Caroga Lake, N.Y.; granddaughter, Desiree A. Hines of Plattsburgh, N.Y.; grandson, Gregory J. Hines of Orlando, Fla.; several nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, September 14, 2013, at 10 a.m. at The Chapel of Houghtaling & Smith Funeral Home Inc., 20 Otsego Street, Canajoharie, NY, with the Rev. Miriam Barnes officiating. Burial will take place in Slate Hill Cemetery, Sharon Springs, N.Y.
