Maria Hogan Huxley

Maria Hogan Huxley, 97, formerly of Johnstown, passed away Saturday morning, October 12, 2013, in Humble, Texas.

Mrs. Huxley was born in Johnstown on March 8, 1916, to Dr. Austin Hogan and Margaret Seaman Hogan. She graduated from Johnstown High School and Manhattanville College of the Sacred Heart. She was married to Donald B. Huxley of Gloversville in September 1939.

Mrs. Huxley resided in Oakwood, Ohio, for 35 years. While there, she was a member of the Officer’s Wives Club and the Kiwanis Ladies. She was also a leader and district organizer of the Girl Scouts and helped start the “TWIGs” (Terrific Women in Giving), a support group for Mrs. Mead’s Children’s Hospital.

Mrs. Huxley and her husband returned to Johnstown in 1976 and became active in the community. She was a member of the Fortnightly Club, the Johnstown Historical Society, the Ladies of the Drumm House, the Student’s Club, the Johnstown Chapter of the DAR, and the Republican Women’s Club of Fulton County. She served as a board member of the Wells House for 28 years. Mrs. Huxley was a member of St. Patrick’s Church where she enjoyed the Rosary Society and Church Women United.

In addition to her parents, Mrs. Huxley was predeceased by her husband, Donald, and brothers Austin Hogan and Walter Hogan.

She is survived by her son Donald Lamont Huxley and wife Sandra of Orlando, Fla.; her daughter Kathleen Huxley Stillwagon and husband Kenneth of Humble, Texas; grandchildren, Jeffrey Huxley (Beth); Teresa Huxley Morgan (Jim), Carrie Stillwagon Stanush (Dan) and Kenneth James Stillwagon; great-grandchildren, Emery Kathleen and Jackson Daniel Stanush; nieces, Peggy Hogan Beck and Ruth Clukey; nephews, Jim Hogan and Tom Hogan.

A graveside service was conducted on Saturday, October 26 at St. Patrick’s Cemetery, Johnstown.
