Esther M. Chapman, 85, of Ballston Spa, passed away peacefully Thursday, November 7, 2013. Born in West Galway on June 2, 1928, she was the daughter of Sydney and Lalah Shattuck. She graduated from Galway High School and attended Skidmore College where she was a vocal major.
Esther worked for Richard Hood, Esq., and the Fulton County treasurer’s office in Johnstown for many years. For more than 40 years, she was a member of the United Methodist Church of Johnstown. She was a member of the Cheerful Workers Sunday school class and a faithful member of the church choir. She was also a member of the Eastern Star in Broadalbin.
She was predeceased by her first husband of 25 years, Harold Bell; her second husband of 33 years, Ralph Chapman; her sisters, Janet, Euphemia, and Almira; and her brother, Ivan. Esther is survived by her devoted children, Kathleen Houghton (John) of Hingham, Mass., and Daniel Bell (Stephanie) of Ballston Spa; cherished grandchildren, James, Danielle, Adam, Christian, Jeremy, and Jennifer; great-grandchildren, Porter, Peyton, Sydney and Daniel; step-children, Ralph Chapman Jr. (Bonnie) of Libertyville, Ill., Lynne Brooks of Scotia, Laurie Volpi (Tom) of Defreetsville, and Debra Chapman of Bridgeport, Conn.; several step-grandchildren, step-great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Monday, November 11, at the Ballston Spa United Methodist Church, 101 Milton Avenue, Ballston Spa. Burial will be private. Relatives and friends are invited to call on Sunday from 2 to 4 p.m. at Armer Funeral Home, 39 East High Street, Ballston Spa.
