David Raymond Butkus, 68, of Wooster Street, Gloversville, NY, passed away peacefully at his home early Saturday morning, October 8, 2016. He was a resident of Amsterdam, NY for most of his life until moving to Gloversville eight years ago.
Born February 22, 1948, in Amsterdam, he was the son of the late Raymond and Irene (Leskey) Butkus. Dave was a graduate of the Wilbur H. Lynch High School, class of 1966. He went on to receive a bachelor’s degree in psychology from Springfield College and later earned his M.Ed in special education from the College of St. Rose in Albany.
Dave was employed by General Electric Company in Schenectady, worked for Fiberglass Industries in Amsterdam, and for Liberty Enterprise in Amsterdam. His true career passion was fulfilled when he was employed as a special education teacher for the Greater Amsterdam School District for over 20 years.
Dave was a family man who would do anything for his family and friends. He had a great sense of humor, was compassionate and caring, and he was always rooting for the underdog. This is what made him an extraordinary teacher. He enjoyed gardening and at was an avid runner. He will be lovingly remembered by his family as well as his many friends.
On January 16, 1975, he married the former Patricia Mondt. Besides being survived by his wife of 41 years, Dave is survived by his son, Benjamin Butkus and his wife Beth Fahey of Brooklyn; his daughter, Erin Jennings and her husband Jonathan of Broadalbin; the grandchildren he loved to the moon and back, Ava, Garrett, and Kaitlyn; a brother, James Butkus of Scottsdale, Arizona; a beloved cousin, Karen Buckley and her husband John; and a large extended family. He will also be missed by his fur babies, Daisy and Mr. Chips.
A legacy candle ceremony will be held on Thursday, October 13, 2016, at 6 p.m. at the Betz, Rossi & Bellinger Family Funeral Home, 171 Guy Park Avenue, Amsterdam. The family will receive relatives and friends on Thursday from 4 to 6 p.m. at the funeral home.
