Peggy L. Allen, of Canajoharie, New York, died Sunday, March 26, 2017, at Strong Memorial Hospital in Rochester, New York, surrounded by her husband and family.
She was born in Gloversville, New York, September 8, 1949, to Lisle Post and Eleanor Horning. Upon marrying Herbert T. Allen on May 20, 1967, she received the blessing of her second set of parents, Herbert L. and Virginia Allen. The way her family best remembers her is that she loved to bake, and her chocolate jumbos were famous. She made her own spaghetti sauce for many years, and the grandchildren still request frozen packs to take home with them when they visit. Peggy knitted, crocheted and did cross-stitch. She shared these talents either by teaching those she loved to do them or bestowing her handmade gifts on them. She loved her garden and her flowers. Lighthouses were her hobby, and had a collection to show anyone who entered her home. Years ago, she would use their vacations to visit lighthouses that she hadn’t seen yet. Every spring, the hummingbird feeders would come out and “baby” would be back to eat.
When her children were in school, she worked at the school cafeteria to be home when they were. Then she worked at Stewart’s in Palatine Bridge. She later worked at the Savings and Loan in Canajoharie for many years. One of her last careers was being a town of Canajoharie court clerk, although her favorite titles would be wife, mother and grandmother.
Peggy is survived by her husband, Herbert; her daughter and son-in-law, Wendy and Ted Shaver; her son, Eric Allen; her grandchildren, Amanda and Matthew Williams; her sister and brother-in-law, Donna and Jerry Jones; brother, Dale Post; and many beloved nieces and nephews.
The family will accept company from those who knew and loved her to celebrate her life on April 2, 2017, from 10 a.m. to noon at the Ottman Funeral Home located at 22 Church Street, Cherry Valley, NY. In lieu of flowers, please send donations to Mountains to Miracles, Attn: Paul Dubois, P.O. Box 137, Tribes Hill, NY 12177, in Peggy’s memory.
