Barbara J. Ferry

Barbara J. Ferry, 77, of Woods Hollow Road, Gloversville, died at home on Wednesday, April 26, 2017, surrounded by her loving family.

She was born in the Bronx on October 24, 1939, a daughter of Nicola and Rose Rizzo Genovese and was a 1957 graduate of East Meadow High School on Long Island. Barbara moved to the area nearly 44 years ago. She completed the Licensed Practical Nursing program at BOCES and also graduated from FMCC as a certified teaching assistant.

Mrs. Ferry was employed as a teaching assistant at the Broadalbin-Perth School District for over 20 years, retiring in 2008. She returned as a substitute after retiring.

She was a member of St. Joseph’s Church in Broadalbin.

Barbara enjoyed knitting, counted cross stitching, and crocheting. Every year, she entered her craftwork at the Fonda Fair. In 2016, she was awarded the Blue Ribbon for Best of Show for her counted cross stitch entry. Barbara also was a rock hound and enjoyed searching for precious gems and rocks.

Survivors include her loving husband, William G. Ferry Sr., whom she married on September 25, 1959; two sons, William G. (Lucretia) Ferry II of Mayfield, and Brian N. Ferry of Statesville, NC; a daughter, Deborah (Morris) Johnson of Amsterdam; a brother, Nicholas (Marylou) Genovese of Chino Valley, AZ; five grandchildren; and a nephew.

Calling hours will be held on Monday from 5 to 8 p.m. at the Robert M. Halgas Funeral Home Inc., 111 County Highway 106, (corner of Route 29 and Black Street), Johnstown. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated on Tuesday at 11 a.m. at St. Joseph’s Church, 7 North Street, Broadalbin, with the Rev. Jun Segura, officiating. Burial will be in St. Basil’s Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to Mountain Valley Hospice, in care of the funeral home.
