Edward J. Abel, 91, of Stevers Mill Road, Broadalbin died Thursday morning June 29, 2017 at home.
He was born in Amsterdam on March 12, 1926 a son of George and Agnes Leonard Abel and lived in Tribes Hill as a child. Edward was educated in local schools. He moved to Broadalbin in 1950.
Mr. Abel was employed at Amsterdam Auto Parts for several years. He later worked at Lane Construction in Fultonville, retiring in 1988.
In his youth, Edward raced cars and later owned and raced in the NASCAR circuit.
Mr. Abel was a veteran of the US Army during World War II and was stationed in Italy.
He was a member of the American Legion and VFW, both in Broadalbin, and was a former member of the Perth Volunteer Fire Department.
He was married to Alberta T. Bates on November 7, 1944. She died June 5, 2002. In addition to his wife and parents, he was predeceased by a daughter, Patricia L. Abel; three granddaughters, Christin and April Townsend and Michelle Wilson; and a sister, Marion Hallenbeck.
Survivors include two daughters, Mary J. Wilson of Manning, S.C. and Rose M. Abel of Broadalbin; 10 grandchildren; many great-grandchildren; and nieces, nephews, and cousins.
There will be no calling hours. Cremation will be performed at Park View Crematorium, Schenectady. Final burial will be Ferndale Cemetery, Johnstown at the convenience of the family. Memorial contributions may be made to the Brennan Memorial Humane Society, in care of the funeral home. Arrangements are by the Robert M.
