Walter R. Braemer, 85, a longtime Johnstown resident, passed away on Wednesday November 29, 2017 at St. Mary’s Healthcare.
He was born in Gloversville on January 6, 1932 a son of Walter and Blossom Braemer and a 1949 graduate of Johnstown High School. In addition, Walter graduated from Albany Business College with a degree in accounting. Mr. Braemer also served in the US Navy from 1951-1954 aboard the USS Coral Sea during the Korean Conflict.
Walter was a licensed Master Plumber and worked with A. R. Jung and Brookside Plumbing before operating his own plumbing business for over 25 years. He later worked in security at St. Mary’s Hospital for 17 years. He enjoyed photography, baseball, hunting, and fishing. He was a long time member of the Pine Tree Rifle Club and the NRA.
His passing was preceded by his wife of 65 years, the former Violet D. Putman; a sister, Patricia D., and two brothers, Wayne, J. and Craig T. Braemer. Survivors include three children, Walter R. Braemer, Jr. of Fort Plain, Shari R. Bowne of Johnstown, and Martin R. Braemer of Bowling Green, OH; also three brothers, Edward C. Braemer of Cincinnati, OH, Raymond W. Braemer of Oxen Hill, MD, and Donald E. Braemer of Elgin, TX; as well as eight grandchildren, four great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
Calling hours will be held on Saturday from 11 am to noon at the Robert M. Halgas Funeral Home, Inc. 111 County Highway 106 (Corner of Route 29 & Black Street), Johnstown followed by a funeral service at noon conducted by Rev. Dr. R.W. Williams. Burial with military honors will be in the new section at Prospect Hill Cemetery, Gloversville.
