Susan Kiernan

Susan Ann Kiernan, 70, passed away September 2, 2018, at Mountain Valley Hospice, surrounded by her family after a courageous battle with cancer. The family would like to thank the staff at New York Oncology Hematology, Nathan Littauer Hospital & Nursing Home and Mountain Valley Hospice for their care and thoughtfulness. Born in Gloversville, New York, Susan was the oldest daugther of Nelson and Monica Kiernan, who both predeceased her. She graduated from Gloversville High School and Lake Erie College in Painesville, OH.

Following college, Susan began her career as an admission officer-recruiter for several colleges including Lake Erie and Russell Sage. She gladly returned to Gloversville in 1993 to begin her 19-year tenure with Nathan Littauer Hospital as vice president of development, retiring in 2012. During that time, she was responsible for marketing, physician recruitment and fundraising. Sue spearheaded the very first annual Nathan Littauer “event,” which continues today. Additionally, she led two successful capital campaigns, raising millions of dollars which supported the construction of the current surgical center and the emergency room. Following retirement, Susan continued to sit on several local boards including Mountain Valley Hospice and Family Counseling Center.

“Style with panache” describes Susan’s approach to life. She loved to travel with, and to, her friends (some which she had for over 50 years) as well as shop, play golf (most proud of her hole-in-one at Pine Brook Golf course in 1998), her cats Chip and Putt, and ski countrywide with friends and family. Recent winters were enjoyed in Palm Springs, CA.

Sue is survived by her four siblings, Michael of Gloversville, Linda of Gloversville, Jennifer (David Moran) of Belfast, ME, Peter (Shawn Cleland) of Caroga Lake; and five nieces and nephews, Kim Cohen of Gloversville, Christine Kiernan of Quincey, MA, Maria Simone of Gloversville, John Simone of Tarrytown, NY and Daniel Kiernan of Ballston Spa.
