Joseph Robert Hanchar, age 95, of Johnstown, passed away peacefully on Sunday, June 9, 2019, at his home.

He was born on February 16, 1924, in Windber, Pennsylvania, son of the late Michael and Anna Hreha Hanchar.

Joseph was a class of 1942 graduate of Johnstown High School. He honorably served his country as a Staff Sergeant in the U.S. Army during World War II. He owned and operated his painting and home improvement business, Joseph Hanchar Decorating for many years. Mr. Hanchar was of the Catholic faith, a longtime communicant of the former St. Anthony’s Church and member of the Knights of Columbus. Joseph was also a member of the Johnstown Moose, Johnstown Eagles and the Gloversville VFW. He served on the Johnstown Board of Education and the Comprehensive Planning Commission and enjoyed time spent with his friends at the Johnstown Senior Center. Joseph was in excellent care by a team of dedicated caregivers in his later years. His nephew, David Hanchar and David’s son Neil were a tremendous help in maintaining Joseph’s home and property for many years.

Survivors include one son, Mark and Mary Hanchar of Barrington, Rhode Island; one daughter, Deborah Hanchar and John Galascione of Great Falls, Virginia; two grandsons, Scott and Jonathan Hanchar; several nieces and nephews.

Mr. Hanchar was predeceased by his wife of 65 years, Dorothy Sweeney Hanchar whom he married on October 22, 1949, and who passed on December 10, 2014.

Visitation for family and friends will be on Thursday, June 13, 2019, from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at the Barter & Donnan Funeral Home, 1 N. Melcher Street, Johnstown.

A memorial service at Holy Trinity Church, Glebe Street, Johnstown followed by interment in St. Anthony’s Cemetery to be announced for a later date.

Memorial contributions in lieu of flowers may be made his memory to the Alzheimer’s Association.
