Shirley J. (Durgan) Salls, 90, of Amsterdam, died on Thursday, January 23, 2020.

Shirley was born on July 27, 1929, to the late Clarence and Jennett (Lake) Durgan.

Originally from Saratoga Springs, Shirley spent much of her adult life living in Schuylerville, in the home her husband grew up in. After retirement, she and her husband moved to Broadalbin to be closer to her son, Timothy, and his family.

A licensed practical nurse, Shirley quit high school in order to attend nursing school. She had a long career taking care of others. She worked as a pediatric nurse for Saratoga Hospital and Mintzer, Yates and Waite in Saratoga Springs. She took a break from nursing for a stint working alongside her husband at Manle Auto Parts and also Wilton Developmental Center. Later, she returned to nursing and completed her career at St. John Neumann Residence. In her spare time, she loved playing cards, providing odd jobs for grandkids to earn and learn the value of a dollar, and camping at Roger’s Rock. She had quite a sweet tooth and regularly stocked candies near her bedside and armchair. Guests were welcome to partake and add to the pot.

Along with many family members, Shirley was predeceased by her beloved husband, John “Jack” Salls in 2008; and an infant son, Stephen, in 1953.

She is survived by a sister, Gail Kirkpatrick of Saratoga Springs; son, Timothy (Kathy) of Gloversville; her grandchildren, John Salls (Ellen) of Ballston Lake, Jennifer Bailey (Peter) of Cambridge, and Nicholas Salls of Broadalbin. She was a very proud and loving great-grandma to Kieran, Abbey, and Nevan Salls; Mara, Eden and Anna Bailey; and Hunter Salls.

She will be remembered by those that knew her for the times spent together and loving us all so much. She is already missed but will be forever in our hearts. A private service will be conducted at a later date with interment to follow at Saratoga National Cemetery.
