Charles J. “Jeff” Barkalow, 73, left this earth peacefully in his sleep on Wednesday morning, January 29, 2020, at his home with his loving wife Stella by his side.
Jeff was born in Spring Lake, New Jersey on March 9, 1946, the son of the late Charles H. Barkalow and Dorothy M. Cahill. Jeff graduated from Shaker High School in 1965 where he excelled as a cross country runner. He joined the U.S. Navy after graduation and was stationed at N.A.S Pensacola, Florida from 1966 to 1970, working on the Sherman Field Crash Crew. He was honorably discharged in 1970.
On January 10, 1969, Jeff married Stella L. Riggs in Bay Minette, Alabama. They just celebrated 51 years of marriage. In 1970 he joined the New York State Police and served twenty years before retiring to ‘pass gas’ with Paraco until 2012. He enjoyed the past few years of his retirement on his farm in Mayfield with Stella and canine companion, Drac, traveling regularly to visit friends and family. You could often find them sunning themselves at the top of the hill or in the driveway.
He is survived by his wife, Stella; daughter, Kathy Cromie (Kit); son, Thomas J. Barkalow (Kalli); grandchildren, Hanna Q. Cromie, Derek T. Barkalow, Emily M. Cromie, and Autumn R. Brooks; his siblings, Mitchell T. Barkalow (Gloria), Carol A. Barkalow (Sheila), Janice M. Anderson (Rexford); and nephew, Rexford A. Anderson; and niece, Alexis M. Anderson. Jeff was preceded in death by his brother, Richard A. Barkalow.
It was Jeff’s wish to donate his body to Albany Medical Center for study, and there will be no funeral or calling hours. If you would like to celebrate Jeff and his life, sit outside on a beautiful day with the sun on your face and the wind in your hair.
