James G. McAuliffe Sr., age 85, of Johnstown, passed away on Sunday, January 31, 2021, at St. Peter’s Hospital, Albany.
He was born on January 6, 1936, in Johnstown, to the late John Basil McAuliffe and Kathryn Duffy McAuliffe.
Jim was a graduate of Johnstown High School. He earned his bachelor’s and master’s from Siena College and completed doctoral work at Lehigh University in Bethlehem, PA.
Jim’s career included secondary school teacher, high school principal and Superintendent of Schools. Jim retired in 2009 after 20 years of teaching English at the Tryon School for Boys. He loved those boys.
Jim was a member of Holy Trinity Parish in Johnstown, a member of Phi Delta Kappa and he served on the Board of Directors for Fulton Friendship House.
Jim is survived by his loving wife, Marguerite Patnode McAuliffe, whom he married on July 4, 1959; and their children, John P. McAuliffe and his wife Margie, Kathleen M. Kelly and her husband Brian, James G. McAuliffe Jr. and his wife Maureen, Patrick K. McAuliffe and his wife Michele.
Jim is also survived by eleven grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren.
Private services will be conducted at the convenience of the family.
Spring interment will be at St. Patrick’s Cemetery, Johnstown.
In lieu of flowers, contributions in James memory may be made to St. Peter’s Hospital COVID Unit, Albany, NY and Holy Trinity Catholic Church, Johnstown, NY.
