PHOTOGRAPHER:

Elizabeth (Liz) Fowler, 92, of Gloversville, passed away peacefully on Thursday, July 15, 2021, at the Mountain Valley Hospice Home.

Born June 6, 1929, in Oneida, NY, she was the daughter of Louis and Sarah Cunningham. She was a graduate of Oneida High School and SUNY Cortland with a bachelor of science in health and physical education. Elizabeth taught physical education in St. Johnsville Central School from 1951-1954. She continued her teaching career in Pennsylvania at the parochial schools that her children attended. Later in life, she completed a Nursing Program in Reading, PA, and worked as an LPN at Reading Hospital, and then at the Fulton County Infirmary until her retirement.

She married William Max Fowler in 1956, and they enjoyed 39 years of marriage, until Mr. Fowler’s passing in 1995. They were blessed with a large family of 13 children.

Elizabeth is survived by children, Karin Biron (Don), William Fowler (Sonia), Patricia Johnston (Bob), Mary Kiernan, Mickey Poorman (Rob), Kathleen Fernandes (Joe), Nancy Thornton (John), James Fowler (Danielle), John Fowler (Ellen), Christopher Fowler (MaryBeth); and stepchildren, Judy VanDusen and Janet Hurwitz (Bob). She was the proud grandmother of 36 grandchildren and great-grandmother of 15 great-grandchildren. She is also survived by several nieces and nephews.

In addition to her husband, Elizabeth was predeceased by her sister and brother-in-law, Mary and Bob Johnson of Cortland; stepson, Lawrence Fowler; and son-in-law, Steven VanDusen.

Elizabeth led an enjoyable life and lived it to the fullest. Most important to her was spending time with her family. She loved summers at Canada Lake, leaf peeping trips in the fall, Thanksgiving dinners, and beach days. She had a great sense of humor and loved sharing a laugh with friends and family. She loved to travel, and music of all types. She enjoyed all sports, in particular playing golf and cheering for her beloved New England Patriots.

Elizabeth was of the Roman Catholic faith. She was a communicant of the Church of the Holy Spirit in Gloversville and St. Joseph’s Church in Downingtown, PA.

Elizabeth’s family would like to thank the staff of the Sarah Jane Sanford Home for Women in Amsterdam for welcoming her into their family and being there for her when we were unable to be. The family would also like to thank the staff at Mountain Valley Hospice for their kindness and care.

The family will receive friends on Monday, July 19, 2021, from 4 to 7 p.m. at the A.G. Cole Funeral Home, 215 E. Main St., Johnstown. A Mass of Christian burial will be held on Tuesday, July 20, 2021, at 10:00 a.m. at the Church of the Holy Spirit, Gloversville.
