Marion Gahr Sira

Marion F. Gahr Sira, 81, of Thompson Street, Broadalbin, passed away on Friday, July 23, 2021, at Nathan Littauer Hospital, Gloversville surrounded by her loving family.

She was born in Amsterdam, on December 9, 1939, the daughter of Frederick and Frances Harris Gahr and lived in West Galway before moving to Broadalbin at age seven. Marion was a 1957 graduate of Broadalbin High School and was a longtime village resident.

Mrs. Sira waitressed at the former Brick Oven and at the C & R Restaurant. Later, she was a school bus driver for the Broadalbin-Perth School District for twenty-five years.

Marion was the original founder of the Adirondack Arts & Craft Guild and was the Fresh Air chairperson of the Fonda-Gloversville Chapter. She served as the NYS Teacher’s Union president for local school bus drivers.

Marion loved her home and all those activities it afforded. She excelled at quilting, sewing, knitting, decorating, gardening and cooking. There was nothing she couldn’t do. She loved children; both hers and any others she could get her hands on. Marion enjoyed arranging her BHS class reunions and so looked forward to seeing her childhood friends. But most of all, she loved her children, the “jewels in her crown,” her grandchildren, and her great-grandchildren. She never missed an opportunity to tell them she loved them and how proud of them she was.

In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her daughter-in-law, Louise.

Survivors include her husband, John P. Sira Sr., whom she married on December 25, 1963; three children, Susan (Ronald) DeRocker of Broadalbin, John P. Sira Jr. of Mayfield, and Rebecca Sira (Shawn Seeley) of Johnstown; six grandsons, Cameron, Jeremiah, Garrison, John, Darrien, and Wyatt; five great-grandchildren, Elyssa, Paisley, Alyson, Vienna, and Peter; and a cousin, Carol (Don) Freer.

Calling hours will be held on Tuesday from 10 a.m. to noon at the Robert M. Halgas Funeral Home Inc., 111 County Highway 106 (corner of Route 29 and Black Street), Johnstown, followed by a funeral service at noon with the Rev. Linda Martin, officiating. Burial will be West Galway Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Broadalbin Library Station or to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, both in care of the funeral home.
