Martha J. Truax

Martha J. Truax, 76, of North Main Street, Mayfield passed away Monday August 23, 2021, at St. Mary’s Healthcare, Amsterdam.

She was born in Cobleskill on November 28, 1944, a daughter of Howard and Helen Whitman Schaffer and was a 1961 graduate of Cobleskill Central School. Martha attended cosmetology school in Schenectady. She lived in Hurley for twenty-eight years and moved to Mayfield in 2005.

Mrs. Truax worked as a nurse’s aide in Kingston. She later worked for many years in retail stores and retired as the store manager from Klub Kids in Kingston in 2003.

Martha enjoyed lunching with her classmates and planning class reunions. She volunteered with the Cobleskill Alumni Group doing local charity work.

Mrs. Truax was a member of the Adirondack Baptist Church and attended Bible Study there.

She was married to Carleton L. Truax on April 26, 1963. Sadly, he died on April 16, 2020. In addition to her husband and parents, she was predeceased by a brother, Floyd Schaffer, and a sister, Flora Decker.

Survivors include a son William (Laura-Ann) Truax of Lake Katrine; a grandson, Ryan T. Truax and his fiancée, Holly Levis; a brother, George (Ellen) Schaffer of Aurora, NY and several nieces, nephews, and cousins.

A calling hour will be held on Friday from 10 – 11 a.m. at the Robert M. Halgas Funeral Home, Inc., 111 County Highway 106 (Corner of Route 29 & Black Street), Johnstown followed by a funeral service at 11 a.m. at the funeral home with Pastor Nate Petersen, officiating. Burial will be in Cobleskill Rural Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to St. Jude Children Research Hospital, in care of the funeral home.
