Cynthia B. “Sam” Young

Cynthia B. Young, 72, of West End Avenue, Oneonta, and formerly of Perth, passed away Thursday, September 23, 2021 at St. Mary’s Healthcare, Amsterdam. She was affectionately known as “Sam” and as “Aunt Sam” to her many nieces and nephews.

Born in Amsterdam on May 9, 1949, she was one of eleven children of Harley and Alta Raine DuRose. Sam was raised and educated in the local area and was a resident most of her life.

Mrs. Young was employed as a sales manager for AT&T Cellular in Amsterdam for ten years. Later, she worked at Wal-Mart in Amsterdam for several years.

Sam was a dedicated NY Yankee fan and enjoyed her beloved dogs, Jake, Luke, and Gus.

She married John L. “Jack” Young on December 21, 1968. Sadly, he died on December 29, 2006. In addition to her husband and parents, she was predeceased by seven brothers, Jack, Earl, Lynford, James, Richard, Charles, and Lloyd DuRose; and two sisters, Mildred Dickson and Harlene Bruce.

Survivors include two sons, John (Katie) Young, Jr. of Broadalbin and Timothy (Michele) Young of Lexington, KY; three grandchildren, John (Ashley) Young, III, MacKenzie Young, and Ryan Young; two great-grandchildren, Oliver and Cooper Young; a sister, Sylvia Campo; thirty-two nieces and nephews; and several cousins.

The family will receive relatives and friends on Tuesday, September 28, 2021 from 5-8 p.m. at Robert M. Halgas Funeral Home, Inc. 111 County Highway 106 (Corner of Route 29 and Black Street) Johnstown. Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, September 29, 2021 at 10 a.m. at the funeral home with Rev. Kent McHeard, officiating. In accordance with current recommendations, facial coverings and social distancing are recommended. Cremation will be performed at Park View Crematorium, Schenectady.
