Laura Jean (Gaida) Channell, age 65, of Sammonsville, NY, passed on September 1, 2021 while surrounded by family after a fearless battle with pancreatic cancer.
Laura was born on January 5, 1956 in Troy, NY to Edward Gaida and Dorothy (Marsolais) Gaida. She graduated from Fonda Fultonville Central School in 1974 and then attained her chemistry degree and high school teaching degrees from the College of St. Rose in Albany, NY. Laura also gained teaching certificates in both high school biology and physics. Laura taught at several school districts, retiring from Fort Plain Central in 2016. She also had a short career in real estate and worked with the Howard Hanna Group in Johnstown for several years after retiring from teaching. Laura was married to Bob Channell for 27 years and together they also successfully owned and operated Wemple & Edicks Ice Cream and Bakery in Sammonsville for 20 years, selling the business in 2020. Notably, Laura had always had a love of baking and followed her dreams to attend and graduate from Culinary Institute of America in Hyde Park, NY. Prior to her teaching career she used these skills and found employment at a number of restaurants and hotels, including the Charles Hotel in Boston and the Sagamore Resort in Lake George.
Laura is survived by: her husband, Bob Channell; father, Edward Gaida; brothers, David Gaida and Joseph Gaida; sister, Kim Gaida Sieber and her husband, Eric Sieber; step-daughter, Lori Doppman and her husband, Peter Doppman; step-sons, Robert Reinke and his wife, Peggy, and William Reinke, as well as several grandchildren, great grandchildren, nieces, nephews, aunts and uncles, cousins, and friends.
Services will be held at 11am on Saturday, September 25, 2021 at the Fonda Reformed Church in Fonda, NY. Laura loved animals and was always rescuing something alongside the road. In lieu of flowers, please make a donation to your local animal rescue organization.
