She was born on December 26, 1933, in Gloversville,
NY, the daughter of the late Henri and Marian
(Fredericks) Causse.

Nathan Littauer Hospital School of Nursing and
graduated in 1954. She also trained at John’s Hopkins
University School of Nursing. Joan worked as a
Registered Nurse at Nathan Littauer Hospital for 40
years, retiring in 1995. A member of the N.L.H. Nurses
Alumni Association, she enjoyed attending the
monthly luncheons with her colleagues and longtime
friend, Rose Kuebaugh. Joan was of the Catholic
faith, a communicant of the former Immaculate
Conception Church in Johnstown.
In 1955, Joan married Kenneth N. Benton Jr. while
he was stationed at the former Sampson Air Force
Base located near Waterloo, NY. Upon Ken’s discharge
from the service, the Benton’s moved back

Joan secured a position as a registered nurse at
Nathan Littauer Hospital. While at Nathan Littauer,
Mrs. Benton worked in the trauma units, pediatrics,
the ER and IC Units. Joan was awarded the Goodwill
Award for her years of service and devotion to
her patients.
Mrs. Benton also enjoyed spending summers at
Caroga Lake. An exceptional swimmer, she enjoyed
spending time on the water. Joan would never
turn down a nice leaf drive to see the autumn
colors flushing into the Adirondacks. Her greatest
joy, however, was spending time with her children,
grandchildren, and great-grandchildren, especially
at Christmas for the traditional reading of The
Night Before Christmas. Joan also enjoyed hosting
her Bible Study group with her longtime friend,
Joan White, sharing thoughts about religion.
