PHOTOGRAPHER:

Johnstown – Richard (Dick) Xavier Kline, age 95, passed away peacefully at home on Sunday, June 26th, surrounded by family.
Dick was born on October 11th, 1926, to George and Rose (Rauer) Kline, in Johnstown, NY, as the eldest of four.
During WWII, he left Johnstown High School in 1943 at age 17, and joined the US Marine Corps, serving aboard the USS Astoria. When the war was over, he returned to Johnstown to work for the family business, Howell & Pierson Inc. The car dealership has been a mainstay in the downtown Johnstown community for over one hundred years, with four generations of family working there.
Richard was predeceased by his sisters Elenor (Nunzio) Isabella, and Patsy Kline and is survived by his brother John (Kathy) Kline. Richard was also predeceased by his wife, Ruth Ann (Fields) Kline, whom he loved endlessly. They both loved to ski and spent a great deal of time at Royal Mountain. All of their children and grandchildren inherited their lov
e of skiing. They had four children – George (Audrey) Kline, Melanie (John) DeGuardi, Amy (Dan) Santandrea, and Richard (Kristina) Kline. Richard has seven surviving grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
Dick was full of surprises, and his family learned new things about him every time he told a new story. He loved football and fondly recalled going to games with his father at Yankee Stadium. He was a member of the Sons of the American Legion band, playing drums. A connoisseur of mischief and sarcasm, he loved playing jokes, cheating at cards, offering a good-natured ribbing and giving nicknames to family and friends.
There will be a military graveside service at St. Patrick’s Cemetery at a later date to be determined by family.
Arrangements have been entrusted to the Barter and Donnan Funeral Home, 1 N. Melcher Street, Johnstown.
Donations can be made in lieu of flowers to the Royal Mountain Ski Patrol, Mountain Valley Hospice, and the Alzheimer’s Association.
