Edward M. Bishop Sr.


Fonda – Edward “Ed” M. Bishop Sr., 80, of Fonda, NY passed away peacefully on the early morning of Sunday, October 23, 2022, with his family at his side.
Edward was born on June 16, 1942, in Syracuse NY to Gordan and Isabel (Rule) Bishop.
Born and raised in Tully NY, Ed graduated from Tully Central High School in the graduating class of 1960. He then graduated from NYS Ranger School, Wanakena (St Lawrence County), and obtained his Associates Degree in Business Administration from Auburn Community College. On February 1st, 1964, Edward married Nancy Ellen Gorman in Tully, NY.
Upon graduating from Auburn, Ed worked in the accounting department at the NYS Electric and Gas Company before he started his tenured career with Frontier (Continental Telephone). Edwards’ time at Frontier provided countless adventures for the family, as his career advancements brought him to Syracuse, NY, Fairfax, VA, Sherburne, NY, and finally landing in Johnstown, NY. He went on to serve 42 years with Frontier before retiring in 2007.
Following his retirement, Nancy and Ed settled down in Fonda, NY where in 2013, Ed was elected the Town of Mohawk Supervisor, and remained in that position until his passing. Ed was recently honored for his service as Supervisor when the Town of Mohawk named the entrance to the Fonda-Fultonville Little League Park as “Ed Bishop Way”.
In addition, Ed had a passion for community involvement and outreach. This included being a long-time member of the Rotary Club; Loyal Order of the Moose, including serving as Governor for several years; Fraternal Order of the Eagles, including serving as President for several years; served on Tully Central School District Board of Education in the 70s; past President of the Tully Volunteer Fire Department; and served as President of the Greater Johnstown School District Board of Education.
Ed has always been a very devoted man to his faith and served in many capacities throughout the church. Ed was a communicant of St. Leo’s Church in Tully; St. Bartholomew in Sherburne; St. Patrick’s Church in Johnstown, St. Cecelia’s in Fonda, and Auriesville Shrine in Fultonville. Regarding roles, Ed served on the boards and was a lector at St. Patrick’s, St. Cecelia’s and Auriesville Shrine. He also was a religious education instructor. Taking his continued service into consideration, in 2012 Ed was asked to help coordinate the celebration and canonization of the first Native American Saint, Kateri Tekawitha.
Edward is survived by his wife Nancy (Gorman) Bishop; his five children: Colleen M. Ioele-DeCristofaro (Joe DeCristofaro), Edward M. Bishop Jr., Kevin M. Bishop, Amy M. Praught (John-David) and Susan M. Murtaugh (John); his six grandchildren: Amanda Bishop, David (DJ) Ioele, Ellen Praught, Megan Murtaugh, Ella Bishop, and Michael Murtaugh; and his beloved great-grandson, Christopher Joseph Lanzi, and special son-in-law, David Ioele.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Wednesday, October 26, 2022, at 12:00 p.m. at the Holy Trinity Church, 205 Glebe St, Johnstown, NY 12095.
Visitation for family and friends will be held prior to the service at the church from 10:00 a.m. until 12:00 p.m.
Interment to follow at Evergreen Cemetery Fonda NY.
