Marshall D. Bates, Jr.

Mayfield – Marshall D. Bates, Jr. 89, of Vandenburg Point Road, Mayfield, passed away on Sunday, October 30, 2022, at home.
He was born in Mayfield on January 3, 1933, a son of Marshall and Alberta Kimberly Bates and was educated in local schools. Marshall was a lifelong area resident.
Mr. Bates was employed at GE in Schenectady and later worked at the former Kentris Chevrolet, formerly of Johnstown. He retired in 1998 from the Town of Mayfield, where he worked as a mechanic for twenty years. On his lunch break, Marshall often repaired bicycles for local children.
He loved baking and decorating cakes with his wife for all the family special occasions. Marshall also enjoyed attending soccer games to support his nieces and nephews. He loved spending time with family and friends and was a father figure to many children. He loved roller-skating and listening to music and tinkering in his garage.
Marshall was a veteran of the US Army.
In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by four sisters and two brothers.
Survivors include his wife, Nancy Washburn Bates, whom he married on January 1, 1953; a sister-in-law, Linda Miller of Gloversville; and several nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Cremation was performed at Park View Crematorium, Schenectady. Calling hours will be held on Monday from 10 a.m. to noon at the Robert M. Halgas Funeral Home, Inc., 111 County Highway 106 (Corner of Route 29 & Black Street), Johnstown. A memorial service will follow at noon at the funeral home with Linda Eastman, presiding. Burial with military honors will be in Prospect Hill Cemetery, Gloversville. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Heart Assoc., in care of the funeral home.
