Glenville – Frederick William Newnham III, 81, of Glenville (formerly from Schenectady), New York, passed away on January 17, 2023 from complications of chronic lymphocytic leukemia.
The son of the late Frederick W. Newnham, Jr. and Dorothy (Handy) Newnham, he was born on June 28, 1941 in Gloversville, NY. He was raised in Johnstown, New York and graduated from Johnstown High School in 1959. On October 4, 1959, Fred met the love of his life, Janice, in Albany, New York when they were first year students at Siena College and Albany Medical Center School of Nursing. They were married on February 22, 1962. After graduation from Siena College, Fred spent several years serving his country in the United States Army. He was honorably discharged from the Army in 1967 as a first lieutenant.
He began his career as a math teacher at Central Park Middle School in Schenectady, NY. Fred taught for over thirty years and impacted the lives of many students and colleagues. During his time at Central Park, he ran the Central State Street Neighborhood Community Youth Program during the winter months and for six weeks in the summer. He wanted to provide a place for students to go after school during the colder months and during the summer. Upon retirement, Fred enjoyed time spent with his family and friends. After the birth of his grandchildren, he was a devoted Papa and loved attending his grandchildren’s baseball and hockey games.
Fred is survived by his loving wife Janice (White) Newnham, his daughter Jennifer Newnham, son and daughter-in-law Rick and Mary Newnham, and daughter and son-in-law Courtney and Jerry Radford and his adored grandchildren Joshua and Laura Radford. Also, he is survived by his brother and sister-in-law George and Judy Newnham as well as his nephew George Newnham Jr, nieces Shelly Newnham Hayward, Barbara Newnham Kiser, and Deborah Newnham Hoyle. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his brother and sister-in-law Donald and Elaine Newnham and his nephew Donald Newnham Jr. Fred was much loved by the White family and will be missed by his brothers and sisters-in-laws Tom Baker, Jerry and Helen White, Richard and Amy White, Ray and Carol White, Ron White and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his sister-in-law Beverly White Baker and brother-in-law Philip White.
Fred was a devout Roman Catholic who had a personal relationship with Jesus Christ. We, therefore, know this occasion is not about “Goodbye,” but instead, “See you later.” Fred, Dad, and Papa, LUBB–Until we meet again!
