Gloversville – Gloria Ann Joyce ne’ Compagnone, of Gloversville New York, passed away on Friday, December 23, 2022. Born on January 5, 1941, she was two weeks shy of her 82nd birthday.
She is survived by her two sons, Christopher Joyce of Palm Beach Gardens, Florida and David Joyce of Gloversville, New York, and is remembered fondly by her many nephews and nieces born of her sisters, Jean Baron and Rita Powers, both deceased. She is also pre-deceased by her loving husband of 25 years, William Joseph Joyce.
She attained her Bachelor’s Degree at Russell Sage College in 1965, and then her Master’s Degree from the University of Rhode Island in 1967. Her love for learning never diminished and she felt it was her life’s work to instill that love in her students, as an English Teacher in many of the schools near her home. As a High School English teacher in Fonda- Fultonville, Canajoharie and Johnstown, her career spanned three decades, after which she became an adjunct instructor at the same school where her husband taught English, Fulton-Montgomery Community College. After retiring and moving to Florida, Gloria found new purpose in her teaching, helping many of the Haitian residents of Delray Beach learn to read and speak English as a Literacy Coalition volunteer.
Gloria used her mastery of the English language to compete and win at her favorite game, Words With Friends. “GloriaTheGreat” won thousands of games, and often multitasked, watching her favorite variety of Law And Order, SVU, while playing. She was generous beyond measure to her family and friends and was thrilled to still be able to dance at Christopher’s wedding to Jennifer Dale Carlyon, this past September.
Expressions of sympathy can be made in donations to the Jupiter Medical Center Foundation in her name. As tough as the last three months of her life were, they would have been far worse without such a great hospital in our community.
