Johnstown – Thomas E. Mellis, age 86, of Johnstown, NY, passed away peacefully at Wilkinson Residential Health Care Facility, Amsterdam on Saturday, March 25, 2023.
Born on November 5, 1936, in Johnstown, NY, he was the son of the late Joseph and Anna (Grodecki) Mellis.
Thomas was a graduate of Johnstown High School. He proudly served his country in the United States Air Force. Thomas was employed at the former Baronet Litho Co. Inc. of Johnstown for 43 years until his retirement. He was of the Catholic faith and a longtime member of Immaculate Conception Church and Holy Trinity Church, Johnstown.
Thomas was an avid hunter and fisherman. He loved spending time outdoors camping, boating, and gardening. Thomas was a voracious reader and enjoyed woodworking and carpentry. He prided himself on making beautiful pieces of furniture and was always ready to lend a hand to family and friends with carpentry projects. His favorite pastime was spending quality time with his family – especially his grandchildren.
He is survived by his loving wife of 61 years, Karen (Soules) Mellis whom he married on September 9, 1961.
Thomas is also survived by his daughters, Laurie Slifka (Jeffrey) and Maryann Cully (Sean); son Thomas J. Mellis (Angel); sister, Katherine Satterlee; grandchildren, Alexandra Slifka, Hayley Mellis, Eric Slifka, Hannah Baldwin, Brady Cully, Ellery Cully and his dog, Lucy; as well as several nieces, nephews, and cousins.
In addition to his parents, Thomas is predeceased by his brother, Robert Mellis. Visitation for family and friends will be held on Wednesday, March 29, 2023, from 5:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. at the Barter & Donnan Funeral Home, 1 N. Melcher Street, Johnstown, NY. Military honors will take place at 5:30 PM.
A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated on Thursday, March 30, 2023, at 1:00 PM at Holy Trinity Church, 207 Glebe Street, Johnstown, NY with Reverend Matthew Wetsel as celebrant. The family will receive visitors prior to the service from 11:00 a.m. until 1:00 p.m.
Immediately following the church service family and friends will gather at the Johnstown Eagles Club, 12 S. William Street.
Interment will be in St. Anthony’s Cemetery at a later date.

The family would like to thank the kind and caring staff at St. Mary’s Acute Inpatient Rehab, Wilkinson Residential Health Care Facility and Hospice for the wonderful care they provided to Thomas in his final days.
