Motorists must show caution

School is back in session in our area, and that means motorists must be extra careful when driving around schools, especially in the morning and afternoon when children are going into school or heading for home.

Motorists also must be cautious around school buses, and remember to stop for buses that are loading or unloading passengers.

Local police should step up enforcement of speed limits in school zones.

Law enforcement also should ticket motorists who refuse to obey laws regarding school buses. Too many drivers pass stopped buses, putting children at risk.

The burden of keeping school and bus zones safe falls on motorists, but when people shirk that responsibility, law enforcement and judges should send a message to offenders.

Children’s safety must be a community priority.
