Mayor Dayton King recently said Gloversville was being shortchanged in state aid.
Just comparing Johnstown with Gloversville, you can see his point. Johnstown, with an 8,432 population, gets $1,388,000 in state aid. Gloversville, with a population of 15,665, gets $2,300,000. Thus, Johnstown gets $165 per capita, while Gloversville gets $146. If Gloversville got the $18.30 differential, it would receive $286,000 more from the state.
Since both cities are Republican bastions, you can’t even accuse the Democratic-ruled state Legislature of playing party politics. I did try to get similar figures from Amsterdam, but none of its officials responded.
