CANANDAIGUA – Mayfield’s Tom McClellan helped the Section II ‘B’ relay team to a sixth-place finish at the New York State Public High School Athletic Association Nordic Skiing Championships on Tuesday at Bristol Mountain Ski Resort’s Nordic Ski Center.
McClellan teamed with Scotia-Glenville’s Matt Forshey and Lake George’s Tory Sweet to post a time of 28:25.6.
McClellan posted the 25th-fastest split time of the day with a 9:37.8. McClellan finished 21st in the 10K classic race Monday.
Mayfield’s Mitch Akowicz teamed with Queensbury’s James DeCunzo and Johnsburg’s Ethan Cooper on the Section II ‘C’ relay team, placing 12th with a time of 29:55.2.
Akowicz posted the 34th-fastest split time of the day with a 10:18.0. Akowicz placed 44th on Monday.
Pittsford Mendon of Section V won the boys relay event as the team of Josh Eidem, Tommy Ernst and Gavin Hess posted a time of 25:57.1. Hess posted the fastest relay split of the day with a 8:28.1.
The Section V ‘A’ team (26:17) was second, Old Forge (27:01.8) was third, the Section II ‘A’ team (27:11.3) was fourth and the Section V ‘B’ team (27:39.2) was fifth.
The Section II ‘A’ relay team featured Saratoga Springs’ Seth Mares, Shenendehowa’s Austin Huneck and Saratoga Springs’ Brian Halligan. Huneck won Monday’s classical-style race.
Queensbury’s team of Liam Mulshine, Zane Belden and Ben Anderson placed ninth with a time of 29:00.1.
In the girls race, Mayfield’s Lidija Nikollaj helped the Section II ‘B’ relay team to an eight-place finish. Nikollaj teamed with Guilderland’s Laurie Knapp and Scotia-Glenville’s Gabbi Rodbell to post a time of 33:53.3.
Nikollaj, who placed 26th in Monday’s 7.5K classic race, posted the 25th-fastest relay split of the day Tuesday with a 11:33.5.
Honeoye Falls-Lima of Section V won the girls relay event as the team of Jordan Reed, Hannah Cole and Riley Douglas posted a time of 29:37.8. Cole had the fastest split time of the day with a 9:45.4.
The Section V ‘A’ team (31:01.2) was second, the Section II ‘A’ team (32:33.7) was third, Queensbury (32:42.4) was fourth and the Section V ‘B’ team (32:48.2) was fifth.
The Section II ‘A’ team consisted of Lake George’s Emma Underwood, Scotia-Glenville’s Becca Kraines and Shenendehowa’s Sarah Duclos. Queensbury’s team featured Megan Kellogg, Tyra Wynn and Celine Dreitlein.
The Section II ‘C’ relay team of Scotia-Glenville’s Mikayla Thomas, Queensbury’s Kim Hanchett and Queensbury’s Colleen Rice placed 11th with a time of 36:30.6.
Section II won the overall boys team championship with a two-day total of 438 points. Section V (377 points) was second, Section III (299) was third, Section VIII (154) was fourth and Section IX (118) was fifth.
Pittsford Mendon of Section V won the boys team title with 87 points, while Old Forge of Section III was second with 70 points. Queensbury was third with 57 points, Lake Placid of Section VII was fourth with 41 points and New Paltz of Section IX was fifth with 32 points.
Section V won the overall team title with a two-day total of 446 points. Section II (389 points) was second, Section III (250) was third, Section VII (117) was fourth and Section IX (111) was fifth.
Honeoye Falls-Lima of Section V won the team title with a two-day total of 90 points, while Queensbury was second with 72 points. Old Forge of Section III was third with 54 points, Saranac Lake of Section VII was fourth with 40 points and Wallkill of Section IX was fifth with 28 points.
Honeoye Falls-Lima’s Cole of Section V was the girls nordic combined champion, while Pittsford Mendon’s Hess of Section V claimed the boys title.
Shenendehowa’s Huneck and Lake George’s Underwood received the sportsmanship awards for Section II.
State Alpine Championships
CANANDAIGUA – Saratoga Springs’ Kieran Mottau won the giant slalom event on the second day of competition at the New York State Public High School Athletic Association Alpine Skiing Championships on Tuesday at Bristol Mountain Ski Resort.
Mottau finished with a two-run total time of 1:50.29.
Mottau tied for second in Monday’s slalom competition.
Pittsford Mendon’s Hunter Doyle of Section V finished second with a combined time of 1:50.33 in the giant slalom, while Old Forge’s Austin Down of Section III was third with a time of 1:50.57.
Christian Brothers Academy’s Michael Merecki (1:54.28) was ninth.
Other Section II finishers included Stillwater’s Theo Korenowski (11th, 1:55.58), Glens Falls’ Pat Burton (16th, 1:57.65), Queensbury’s Alex Hohman (21st, 2:00.07), Queensbury’s Russell Merchant (22nd, 2:00.19) and Niskayuna’s Philip Weeber (40th, 2:13.90). Niskayuna’s Ned Feist, Queensbury’s James Paolano and CBA’s P.J. Kotecki all failed to complete both of their runs.
In the girls race, Our Lady of Mercy’s Gibson Donnan of Section V completed a sweep, adding a giant slalom victory to her slalom win on Monday.
Donnan finished with a two-run total time of 1:52.46 in the giant slalom Tuesday.
Honeoye Falls-Lima’s Maggie Gilligan of Section V was second with a total of 1:53.22, while Holland Patent’s Tara Siegel of Section III was third with a 1:55.33.
Albany Academy’s Elle Daley was Section II’s top finisher placing eighth with a two-run total time of 1:58.44. Daley was 15th in the slalom Monday.
Queensbury’s Julia Sante (1:59.42) also posted a top-10 finish in the giant slalom, placing 10th.
Other Section II finishers included Albany Academy’s Alex MacAffer (11th, 2:00.74), Shenendehowa’s Kristen Kruk (13th, 2:00.90), Queensbury’s Olivia Paolano (17th, 2:02.98), Saratoga Springs’ Sierra Spring (20th, 2:04.29), Saratoga Springs’ Gabbi Hedges (26th, 2:07.18) and Shenendehowa’s Courtney Scriven (31st, 2:11.21). Shenendehowa’s Julia Smith and Queensbury’s Katie Zilka failed to finish both of their runs.
Donnan of Section V’s Mercy was the girls state alpine combined champion, while Saratoga Springs’ Mottau was the boys state alpine combined champion.
Section V won the boys overall alpine title with a two-day total of 686 points. Section II was second with 611 points, Section III (530) was third, Section IV (472) was fourth and Section I (444) was fifth.
Windham-Ashland-Jewett of Section IV won the boys team title with 82 points.
Webster of Section V was second with 80 points, while Old Forge of Section II was third with 78 points. Queensbury was fourth with 65 points, while Fox Lane of Section I was fifth with 60 points.
Section V won the girls overall alpine title with a two-day total of 673 points. Section II (600 points) was second, Section III (559) was third, Section IX (481) was fourth and Section I (423) was fifth.
Mercy of Section V won the girls team title with a two-day total of 87 points. Shenendehowa was second with 69 points, while Warwick Walley of Section IX was third with 63 points. Windham-Ashland-Jewett of Section IV and Saranac Lake of Section VII completed the top five with 58 points each.
