JOHNSTOWN – The Mayfield Panthers tuned up for their sectional run with a strong performance Sunday afternoon at Fulton-Montgomery Community College.
Facing Duanesburg in a Western Athletic Conference crossover game, the Panthers built on a strong first-half effort by Ryan Hennessy and Dylan Toscano to cruise to a 61-37 victory.
“Both of them have been a pleasure to have on the team,” Mayfield coach Brian VanNostrand said. “They have set the tone for us in a lot of games.”
Hennessy narrowly missed a first-half double-double, hitting for 10 points and nine rebounds, while Toscano delivered 11 points and three rebounds en route to a 25-14 halftime advantage.
The Eagles pressured Mayfield early in the second half and got the Panthers off their game.
After drawing a foul, Mayfield was whistled for a technical foul.
Coach VanNostrand quickly gathered his team on the sidelines.
“I told them to keep [their] heads,” he said. “Come sectionals that call will be made and that can be a technical. We got a call in our favor and then we got a technical that gave them two shots and the ball. We can’t afford that come sectional time. We need to take care of every opportunity and play to the whistle.”

Duanesburg made a pair of short runs, cutting Mayfield’s lead to 10.
However, the Panthers kept their composure to hold a 42-27 advantage into the fourth quarter of play.
Hennessy took over in the final eight minutes, dominating with strong low-post moves, leading to 13 fourth-quarter points to cap off the 61-37 victory.
Hennessy led all-scorers with 27 points and 17 rebounds and Toscano finished with 16 points.
Sean McGarry led Duanesburg and 10 points, while Kevin Lenehan chipped in with nine points.
“That wraps up our regular season. Now we have to wait until Wednesday to find out where we start play in sectionals,” VanNostrand said.
