Amsterdam basketball players earn Big 10 honors

AMSTERDAM – Three Amsterdam players were among those honored on the recently announced Big 10 boys and girls basketball all-star teams.

Ashlee McDonald and Cristiana Johnson of the Amsterdam girls team both earned honorable-mention status, while Luis Laboy of the boys team also was named honorable mention.

The Lady Rams went 7-12 overall this season, while the boys were 4-15 overall.

LaSalle senior Ralph Erickson was named the boys Big 10 Player of the Year.

Troy seniors Javion Ogunyemi and Jerrell Reid were named to the first team along with Christian Brothers Academy junior Greg Stire, LaSalle junior Elijah Burns and Catholic Central freshman Anthony Mack.

Bishop Gibbons senior Dwayne Freeman, Schenectady senior Darius Macon, CBA junior Nick Marino, Troy freshman Dy’Aire Holt and Bishop Maginn senior Demere Hannah were all named second-team all-stars.

Albany’s Emia Willingham-Hurst was named the girls Big 10 Most Valuable Player and a first-team all-star. Also named to the first team were Troy’s Kiana Patterson, Albany’s Cara Waterson, Troy’s Mary Pattison and Bishop Maginn’s Shiann Coons.

Albany won the Section II Class AA title, while Troy claimed the Class A crown. The Falcons topped Bethlehem at the Times Union Center on March 4, 64-47.

Troy posted a 54-47 win over Holy Names on March 2 at Hudson Valley Community College.

Earning second-team honors were Catholic Central’s Madison Purcell, Albany’s Melissa Canty, Bishop Gibbons’ Talya Williams, Albany’s Mylah Chandler and Catholic Central’s Alliyah Gillespie.

Troy’s Courtney Avery and Cheyenne Williams earned honorable-mention status.

Also named honorable mention were Catholic Central’s Regan McFerran, Albany’s Ayana Hunter, Catholic Central’s Shanley Hunter, Bishop Gibbons’ Paris Jarrell, Catholic Central’s Faith Welch, Schenectady’s Alexus Durham, Bishop Maginn’s Courtney Lane and Bishop Maginn’s Shayona Faulks.

Amsterdam will host the Suburban Council-Big 10 senior games Tuesday. The girls game is slated for 6 p.m., while the boys game is set for 7:30 p.m.
