Vikings hold off Raiders

DELHI – After trailing 42-29 at the half, the Fulton-Montgomery Community College men’s basketball team saw its second-half rally come up short Friday in the Region III Tournament quarterfinals at SUNY Delhi.

FMCC, the No. 5 seed, dropped a 75-69 decision to fourth-seeded Mohawk Valley Community College after cutting the the Vikings’ lead to a point in the final minute.

Lazaro Martinex scored 23 points to lead Mohawk Valley (20-10 overall), while Basil Harley scored 10 points. Martinex scored 17 of his points in the second half for the Vikings, who won two of three meetings with FMCC this season. MVCC also posted a 75-60 win over FMCC on Nov. 20.

Aaron Morton and Kadeem Stanislas each scored 18 points to lead the Raiders, who posted a 78-71 win over MVCC last Saturday.

Qwatee Williams finished with 11 points for FMCC, while Khaleeq Baum added 10 points.

MVCC moves on to today’s semifinals to face top-seeded Herkimer County Community College at 3 p.m. The Generals topped eighth-seeded Finger Lakes Community College in the quarterfinals Friday, 56-52.

FMCC ends the season with a 15-12 overall record.

In the other quarterfinal games, host SUNY Delhi topped North Country Community College, 63-50.

Sean Scott led the third-seeded Broncos with 14 points, while Stefan Bock added 10 points.

Steve Carder scored 19 points to lead sixth-seeded North Country (17-11), while Michael Boyea added 10 points.

Delhi (27-4) will face sixth-seeded Hudson Valley Community College (20-11) in today’s semifinals at 1 p.m.

The Vikings posted a 60-51 win over No. 3 seed Tompkins-Cortland in Friday’s quarterfinals.

Brandon Dean scored 22 points to lead Hudson Valley.

Tyseem Lyles scored 15 points to lead Tompkins-Cortland (21-5 overall), while Devin Redden added 13 points. Jaanai Beckford scored 12 points for the Panthers.

The semifinal winners will meet in the Region III championship game Sunday at 1 p.m.
