H.S. Football Roundup: Sir Bills roll past Tigers

HUDSON FALLS – For the first time since ending the 2008 season 4-5 after two straight crossover wins, the Johnstown football team will finish its season with two wins or more.

The Sir Bills picked up their second straight win Saturday, winning 35-7 at Hudson Falls, earning coach Matt Benton his first career road victory.

“We wanted to get back-to-back wins, and get a win on the road,” Johnstown coach Matt Benton said. “We haven’t won on the road since I’ve been coach. We knew coming in, we wanted to make it a business trip and do what we needed to do to win.”

Since the 2008 season, the Sir Bills were just 1-31 heading into the 2013 season.

Johnstown backed up last week’s 28-24 win over Glens Falls with a convincing victory over the winless Tigers.

Ryan Auty scored three touchdowns for the Sir Bills, scoring on passes of 32 and 93 yards from Steve Forker and rushing for a 10-yard score. Forker finished 2-for-2 for 125 yards and two touchdowns, while Auty had four catches for 153 yards and two scores.

Matt Szurek scored on a 12-yard run for Johnstown and returned an interception for a touchdown. Szurek finished with 44 yards on five carries to lead the Sir Bills’ ground game. He also was 6-for-9 for 64 yards.

The Sir Bills had three interceptions Saturday, while Marino Fabozzi and Adam Caputo each finished with eight tackles.

“Defensively, we stepped up and did a great job, Offensively, we moved the ball well,” Benton said. “We have a lot of weapons offensively, but we’re still working to improve. The kids are confident and positive.”

Trevor Strother scored the lone touchdown for Hudson Falls, scoring on a 39-yard touchdown pass from Dalton Hogan.

Johnstown (2-3 overall, 2-3 Class B West) is scheduled to travel to Schalmont Friday for a 7 p.m. contest.

Hudson Falls (0-5 overall, 0-5 Class B West) is scheduled to host Glens Falls next Saturday.
