Patriots punch ticket to semifinals

BROADALBIN – The Broadalbin-Perth Patriots romped to a 29-0 halftime lead and never looked back, easily advancing to the Section II Class B semifinals, 43-7 over the Lansingburgh Knights on Friday.

The Patriots scored 22 points in the second quarter of what head coach Jim Pelneau described as his team’s best game of the season.

“It definitely is fun when it’s going your way,” said Pelneau. “We felt we could capture some momentum there.”

Broadalbin-Perth quarterback Zach Morreale scored the first points of the night, rumbling 18 yards for the only touchdown of the quarter. The Knights punted on both of their two first quarter drives.

Andre Taylor finished off a 10-play drive early in the second quarter for the Patriots, taking the ball six yards up the middle for an easy touchdown.

Lansingburgh tried to pound the ground with star running back Anthony Walker often, but the Patriots keyed in on the 2012 Athlete of the Year.

“He’s a fantastic back,” said Pelneau. “It was just playing good team defense, being disciplined, and they just rallied up and played well as a team tonight.”

Walker picked up 115 yards on the ground but failed to find the end zone after scoring 21 times in the regular season.

Following a punt by Mike Visco that pinned the Knights at their own 1-yard line, Broadalbin-Perth forced Walker to fumble in the end zone. Biagio Bucciferro recovered the ball for the touchdown. Moments later, Morreale found Luigi Magliocca for a 5-yard touchdown to a cap a drive that was set up by a Magliocca interception. Magliocca rushed for his second touchdown of the game in the third quarter to push Broadalbin-Perth’s lead to 36-0. That score was set up by a Pierre LaPort fumble recovery.

Lansingburgh had no answers for the Patriot defense, turning the ball over once and punting twice before Josh Rodriguez finally found the end zone on the Knights’ fourth drive of the half.

Darius Reyes added an 18-yard touchdown run for Broadalbin-Perth before all was said and done at Patriot Field.

“I’m very happy with the way we approached the whole week,” said Pelneau. “We’ve got ourselves a chance. We’re one of the last four in the tournament so you never know.”

The Patriots will face either Glens Falls or Cohoes in the next round of the tournament. Those two teams face off today at 2:30 p.m.

“Class B all year long as been a battle,” said Pelneau. “Every single week’s been a slugfest, so I’m expecting that next week.”
