FONDA – On a night when it honored its two seniors, the Fonda-Fultonville wrestling team posted a 45-16 win over Ichabod Crane in a Colonial Council match Thursday.
Prior to the match, the Braves honored Thomas and Caleb TenEyck with a brief ceremony. On the mat, both picked up victories in their final home match.
“It was a nice night for our seniors,” Smith said. “Caleb [TenEyck] and Thomas [TenEyck] have matured as young adults and I’m proud of them. Tonight was all about them.”
Kyle Gray opened the match by pinning Ichabod Crane’s Robert James in 46 seconds at 160 pounds before Caleb TenEyck pinned Joe Herrmann in just 14 seconds at 170 pounds to make it 12-0.
After a double forfeit at 182 pounds, Chris Hernigle gave FFCS an 18-0 lead with a forfeit win at 195 pounds.
Following back-to-back double forfeits at 220 and 285 pounds, Justin Kearns (99 pounds) and Josh Hemdinger (106) earned forfeits to push the Braves’ lead to 30-0.
Ichabod Crane got on the board with back-to-back forfeit wins by Jared Kwarta and Jerald Rhodes at 113 and 120 pounds, respectively.
Clane Newcomer pinned the Riders’ Gerrett Marchione-Benedict in 1:38 at 126 pounds to give Fonda-Fultonville a 36-12 advantage.
In the first match of the night to go the full six-minute distance, Ichabod Crane’s Ivan Gomez posted a 16-8 major decision over Justin Newcomer at 132 pounds.
Thomas TenEyck eked out a 2-1 decision over the Riders’ Brandon Gardner at 138 pounds.
“Gardner is a tough kid. This was a boost for Thomas heading into sectionals in a couple of weeks,” Smith said.
After a double forfeit at 145 pounds, Eric Dancy collected a forfeit win at 152 pounds for FFCS to make the final score 45-16.
“The kids came through tonight and wrestled well,” Smith said.
On Tuesday, Fonda-Fultonville lost at Schalmont, 42-23.
Kearns and Caleb Ten Eyck won by pinfall for the Braves, while Dancy won by technical fall. Hemdinger added a forfeit win for FFCS.
Fonda-Fultonville is scheduled to compete in the Schoharie Duals on Saturday.
