GLENS FALLS – The goal of reaching the state tournament remains alive for several area wrestlers.
After advancing out of last weekend’s class tournaments, wrestlers will look to reach the state tournament this weekend.
Amsterdam will compete in the Section II Division I (large-school) tourney, while Johnstown, Fonda-Fultonville and Canajoharie-Fort Plain will take part in the Section II Division II tourney. Both tournaments will take place simultaneously today and Sunday at the Glens Falls Civic Center, with wrestling beginning at 10 a.m. on both days.
Dolgeville/Oppenheim-Ephratah/St. Johnsvile will compete in the Section III Division II tournament at the SRC Arena on the campus of Onondaga Community College in Syracuse today.
Section II Division I
Tournament
Three Amsterdam wrestlers earned top-four seeds for this weekend’s Division I tourney.
Marcus Torres was seeded second at 195 pounds, while Chris Garrison was seeded second at 285 pounds. Torres was seeded behind Columbia’s Dylan Dubuque, while Garrison was seeded behind Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake’s Jake Warren. Warren won by pinfall in last Saturday’s Class B title match.
Garrison was third at last year’s Division I tournament at 220 pounds.
Nelson Quinones earned the fourth seed at 195 pounds for the Rams after placing third at the Class B Tournament last weekend at Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake. Quinones was sixth at 170 pounds at last year’s DI tourney.
Also qualifying for the Division I tourney for Amsterdam were Daniel Montalvo (106), Nick Rodecker (113), Adam Tatun (126), Monty Carmona (138), Jake Rodecker (182) and Francisco Alejandro (220).
The Rams placed fourth in the Class B team standings with 126 points. Queensbury topped Burnt Hills/Ballston Lake 245-218.5 to claim the championship plaque. Averill Park was third with 189 points.
Section II Division II
Tournament
Johnstown had three wrestlers qualify for the Section II Division II Tournament by virtue of their top-four finishes at last weekend’s Class CC Tournament.
Josh LaLonde (182 pounds) finished third for the Sir Bills last week, while Na’Jon Subik (220) and Tristan Zito (285) each finished fourth.
Ravena-Coeymans-Selkirk won the Class CC title with 215.5 points, while Cobleskill-Richmondville was second with 205 points. Schuylerville (166.5 points) was third, host Hudson Falls (161) was fourth and Mechanicville-Stillwater (116) was fifth. Johnstown was eighth with 67.5 points.
Canajoharie-Fort Plain had four of its wrestlers qualify, as Orion Burke (126), Ed Rolle (132), Tangen Rush (170), Trent DeBlock (182) and Hunter Congdon (160) all posted top-four finishes at the Class C tournament.
Burke, Rolle, Rush and DeBlock all finished second, while Congdon was fourth.
Fonda-Fultonville had Clane Newcomer qualify after he placed third at the Class C tourney.
Galway, which finished fifth at the Class D tourney, had Dillan Palaszewski earn the top seed at 120 pounds. Palaszewski won the Class D 120-pound title last weekend. He placed second at 99 pounds at last year’s Division II tournament.
Also qualifying for Galway were Brandon Grupe (99), Collin Bayer (106), Devin Collins (152) and Justin Hardcastle (285).
Bayer, Collins and Hardcastle all finished second at the Class D tourney, while Grupe was third.
Section III Division II Tournament
After finishing third at last weekend’s Section III Class D Tournament at Port Byron, Dolgeville/Oppenheim-Ephratah/St. Johnsville will send seven wrestlers to the Section III Division II Tournament.
Three are seeded among the top six in their respective weight classes.
Ryan Zawtocki, who won the Class D title last weekend, is seeded third at 132 pounds. Zawtocki is 31-8 this season.
Jon Handy is seeded fourth at 145 pounds. Handy, who was second at the Class D tourney, is 31-9 this season.
Noah Handy, who is 31-5 this season, claimed the sixth seed at 138 pounds. Handy won the Class D title last weekend and finished fourth at last year’s Section III Division II Tournament.
Also competing for Dolgeville/Oppenheim-Ephratah/St. Johnsville will be Ezra Lynch (152 pounds), Ben Doolittle (170), Justin Kopet (195) and Victor Conte (285).
Lynch, who is 22-19 this season, was second at the Class D tourney, while Doolittle and Conte each placed third. Kopet posted a fourth-place finish last weekend for Dolgeville/Oppenheim-Ephratah/St. Johnsville.
