Five local wrestlers advance to semifinals

GLENS FALLS – Following the first day of competition at the Section II Wrestling Championships at the Glens Falls Civic Center, five area wrestlers advanced to the semifinals.

In the Division I (large-school) tournament, Amsterdam’s Daniel Montalvo (106), Marcus Torres (195), Nelson Quinones (195) and Chris Garrison (285) all advanced to the semifinals in their respective weight classes.

“It wasn’t a bad way to begin the weekend,” Amsterdam coach Ken Pfeiffer said. “They did pretty well. They all wrestled the best they could and found ways to win. I’m very proud of them.”

Montalvo posted a 20-3 technical fall victory over South Glens Falls’ Vincent Santilli in the quarterfinals in his lone match of the day. Montalvo, the No. 4 seed, improved to 21-12. He will face top-seeded Michael Gonyea of Columbia in the semifinals.

Torres pinned LaSalle’s Dylan Wolfe in 38 seconds in the first round and posted a 10-0 win over Schenectady’s Neil Perreira in the quarterfinals. Torres, the No. 2 seed, improved to 37-4 on the season with the wins. He will face Shenendehowa’s Dustin Bruhns in the semifinals today.

Joining Torres in the 195-pound semifinals is his teammate, Quinones, who won his first match 8-6 in overtime over Ballston Spa’s Aaron Lohaus. In the quarterfinals, he notched a 6-2 win over Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake’s James Martin. Quinones (26-14), the No. 4 seed, will face top-seeded Dylan Dubuque of Columbia in the semifinals.

In the Division II (small-school) tournament, Galway’s Dillan Palaszewski (120) was the lone area wrestler to advance to the semifinals.

Palaszewski, the top seed, advanced with pinfall victories over Granville’s Cole Haines (1:01) and Coxsackie-Athens’ Austin Wood (0:48). Palaszewski, who improved to 37-2 on the season, will face Schoharie’s Austin Lints, the No. 4 seed, in the semifinals.

In addition to the five semifinalists, four other wrestlers remained in competition in the wrestlebacks.

All four earned spots on the podium after reaching the consolation semifinals Saturday.

Amsterdam’s Jake Rodecker (182) and Francisco Alejandro (220) both rebounded after losing matches earlier in the day in the Division I tourney.

Rodecker lost in the quarterfinal round to CBA’s A.J. Groesbeck, the No. 4 seed, by 6-4 margin.

In his lone wrestleback match, he defeated Averill Park’s Charlie Olson, 6-4, to earn a spot in the top six.

Alejandro lost in the quarterfinals to third-seeded Garreck Golish of Ballston Spa, 3-0. He pinned Scotia-Glenville’s Isiah Dixon in 3:31 in his first wrestleback match before securing a top-six finish with a pinfall victory over Averill Park’s Jake Lanzillo.

In the Division II tourney, Fonda-Fultonville’s Clane Newcomer (126) and Johnstown’s Josh LaLonde (182) both secured podium finishes with their efforts Saturday.

Newcomer lost in the first round to Whitehall-Fort Ann’s Tyler Martell, 11-0. In his first wrestleback match, he blanked Warrensburg’s Nolan McNeill, 7-0, before wrapping up his day with a technical fall victory over Tamarac’s Aaron Roddy to reach the consolation semifinals.

LaLonde lost by pinfall to Cohoes’ Noah Nemier, the No. 4 seed, in the quarterfinals. LaLonde bounced back with two straight victories in the wrestleback rounds. LaLonde (29-7) pinned Hoosick Falls’ Bryan Thomas in 1:34 in his first wrestleback match and posted a 12-7 win over Lansingburgh’s Jason Wheeler to secure his spot in the top six.

Several other area wrestlers competed in the Division II tourney, but were eliminated after suffered two losses on the opening day of competition.

Galway’s Brandon Grupe (99), Galway’s Collin Bayer (106), Canajoharie-Fort Plain’s Orion Burke (126), Canajoharie-Fort Plain’s Ed Rolle (132), Galway’s Devin Collins (152), Canajoharie-Fort Plain’s Tangen Rush (170), Canajoharie-Fort Plain’s Trent DeBlock (182), Johnstown’s Na’Jon Subik (220), Galway’s Justin Hardcastle (285) and Johnstown’s Tristan Zito (285) all were eliminated Saturday.

Wrestling resumes today with the semifinals at 10 a.m., with the championship finals in both division to be wrestled on two mats at appoximately 6 p.m.
