FMCC splits doubleheader with MVCC

JOHNSTOWN – The Fulton-Montgomery Community College men’s basketball team rallied from a nine-point halftime deficit to defeat Mohawk Valley Community College 72-68 in Mountain Valley Conference action Thursday night at Fulton-Montgomery Community College.

In the opening game of the doubleheader with the Hawks, the Lady Raiders fell to MVCC 69-61 in their final regular-season game of the season.

The Lady Raiders (17-6 overall, 10-3 MVC) won the opening quarter 15-14, but the Lady Hawks (23-4 overall, 13-0 MVC) used a 14-0 run late in the second quarter to carry a 367-22 lead into the locker room at the break.

The Lady Raiders kept pace with MVCC in the second half but could not close the gap by the final buzzer and ended up on the short end of the 69-61 final score.

My’eesa Grant led FMCC with 16 points and nine rebounds, while Abby Boyer hit for 14 points and two steals.

Chelsea Gibson connected for four 3-pointers in her game-high 25-point, nine-rebound, three-block effort for MVCC, while Cheyenne Clark and Adrienne Graves hit for 10 points apiece. Clark also pulled down 15 rebounds and Graves had 11 boards for the Lady Hawks.

The Lady Raiders will host a regional first-round game Tuesday against an opponent yet to be determined.

On the men’s side, Ayodele Akinmola connected for a game-high 31 points to lead the Raiders to victory.

Dylan O’Connor chipped in with a 13-point effort that included three 3-pointers, while Barceem Dukes and Tremaine Elder added eight points apiece.

Jameel Frith and Devonte Wilson led MVCC (17-9 overall, 8-3 MVC) with 15 points apiece, while Kyron Allen had 14 and Creig Goldson chipped in with 12 points and four assists.

The Raiders (8-14 overall, 6-9 MVC) will close out their regular season on the road Saturday with a 1 p.m. game at Columbia-Greene Community College.
