JHS alpine ski team competes at sectionals

QUEENSBURY – The Johnstown boys and girls alpine ski teams competed at the Section II Alpine Skiing Championships on Tuesday at West Mountain.

The meet consisted of one slalom run and one giant slalom run.

In the boys meet, Queensbury won the team title with a total of 34 points. Saratoga Springs was second with 51 points and Lake George/North Warren was third with 57 points. Johnstown finished sixth with 143 points.

Shenendehowa’s Evan Scriven posted the fastest time in the giant slalom, finishing in 48.79 seconds. Queensbury’s Alex Hohman (50.31 seconds) was second and Lake George/North Warren’s Cooper Perkett (50.52) was third.

Mike Simone led Johnstown, placing 24th with a time of 56.13 seconds.

Zach Szurek (56.72) was 26th for the Sir Bills, while Luke Levin (57.98) was 29th.

Other Johnstown finishers in the giant slalom included Patrick Fleming (33rd, 59.62), Jon Bearden (36th, 1:00.84), Peter VanDenburgh (44th, 1:05.18) and Tyler Kortz (47th, 1:07.29).

In the boys slalom, Shenendehowa’s Scriven posted the top time of 42.99 seconds. Queensbury’s Hohman was second with a time of 43.89 seconds, while Lake George/North Warren’s Lane Feldeisen was third with a time of 44.66 seconds.

Levin posted a time of 50.79 seconds to lead Johnstown with an 18th-place finish.

Simone (52.59) was 20th for the Sir Bills, while Fleming (54.99) was 26th.

Other Johnstown finishers in the slalom included VanDenburgh (32nd, 58.77), Bearden (43rd, 1:09.44) and Kortz (45th, 1:14.36).

Szurek also competed in the slalom but failed to finish his run.

The boys state meet team will consist of Scriven. Hohman, Perkett, Feldeisen, Queensbury’s Hunter Montgomery, Saratoga Springs’ Peter Hoffman, Shenendehowa’s Alex Kruk, Saratoga Springs’ Evan Georgia, Queensbury’s Mike Guido and Glens Falls’ Matt Parent. Saratoga Springs’ Hugh Dempsey will be the team’s alternate.

In the girls meet, Shenendehowa claimed the team title with a total of 26 points. Emma Willard was second with 46 points and Saratoga Springs was third with 55 points. Johnstown finished fifth with 108 points.

Saratoga Springs’ Sarah Coombs won the girls giant slalom with a time of 51.89 seconds.

Emma Willard’s Annabelle Feist (52.81 seconds) was second and Shenendehowa’s Tea Trifunovic (53.36) was third.

Reily Kotwasinski led Johnstown, placing 14th with a time of 58.26 seconds.

Molly Lake was 15th with a time of 58.60 seconds for the Lady Bills, while Emily Fleming (1:02.18) was 27th.

Other Johnstown finishers in the giant slalom included Payton Sardella (31st, 1:03.97), Whitney Western (43rd, 1:14.26) and Taryn Ringer (47th, 1:18.75).

In the slalom, Saratoga Springs’ Coombs completed the sweep, winning with a time of 47.07 seconds.

Her time was 4.36 seconds better than that of runner-up Trifunovic of Shenendehowa, who finished with a time of 51.43 seconds. Emma Willard’s Calynn Cerniglia was third with a time of 53.13 seconds.

Lake led Johnstown, placing 14th with a time of 1:00.13.

Fleming (1:01.32) was 17th for the Lady Bills, while Kotwasinski (1:03.08) was 21st.

Other Johnstown finishers in the slalom included Sardella (33rd, 1:10.28), Western (38th, 1:16.01) and Ringer (56th, 1:59.82).

The girls state meet team includes Cooms, Cerniglia, Trifunovic, Feist, Shenendehowa’s Melissa Taggert, Queensbury’s Lexi Metivier, Albany Academy’s Sammie MacAffer, Saratoga Springs’ Elizabeth McIntyre, Shenendehowa’s Sara Petro and Emma Willard’s Chloe LoFaro. Saratoga Springs’ Catharine Griskowitz was named the team’s alternate.

The state championships will take place Feb. 22 and 23 at Whiteface Mountain in Lake Placid.
