Lady Panthers slip past Middleburgh in sectional opener

MIDDLEBURGH – The third time proved to be the charm for the Mayfield girls basketball team against Middleburgh.

The Lady Panthers lost both regular-season meeting to the Knights, but gained a measure of revenge with a 48-45 win in the first round of the Section II Class C Tournament on Tuesday.

Mayfield lost at home to Middleburgh on Dec. 1, 54-51, and at Middleburgh on Jan. 25, 67-60, during the regular season.

In the third meeting, Mayfield used a strong start to post the win.

The ninth-seeded Lady Panthers outscored the eighth-seeded Knights 31-24 in the first half and held off a second-half rally by Middleburgh.

Julie Hampton led Mayfield with 19 points and two steals, while Kaylee Bumpus had 10 points and seven rebounds. Bri Eagan had eight points and two steals for the Lady Panthers and Shelby Dopp added 10 rebounds.

Lyndsey McCoy scored 16 points to lead Middleburgh, while Bre Palmatier added 14 points.

Mayfield (15-6 overall) is scheduled to travel to top-seeded Lake George on Friday for a Class C quarterfinal contest at 7:30 p.m.

Middleburgh finished its season with a record of 15-6.

Greenville 68, Galway 26

GREENVILLE – Kaitlyn Krasney finished with 27 points to lead fifth-seeded Greenville to a win over 12th-seeded Galway in the first round of the Class C Tournament.

Ava Fitzmaurice added 16 points for Greenville.

Hannah Pawlowski scored eight points to lead Galway.

Greenville (16-5 overall) will face fourth-seeded Maple Hill in Lake George on Friday in the Class C quarterfinals at 6 p.m. Maple Hill topped 13th-seeded Schoharie, 54-27, on Tuesday.

Galway finished its season with a 12-9 overall record.

NEW LEBANON – Fontana LaCoppola finished with 20 points to lead ninth-seeded Oppenheim-Ephratah/St. Johnsville to a win over eighth-seeded New Lebanon in the first round of the Class D Tournament.

Kirsten Raux scored 19 points for OESJ.

Ashley Tynan led New Lebanon with nine points.

OESJ (8-12 overall) will travel to top-seeded Fort Edward on Friday for a Class D quarterfinal contest at 7:30 p.m.

GERMANTOWN – Kasey Griffin scored 16 points to lead fifth-seeded Germantown to a win over 12th-seeded Northville in the opening round of the Class D Tournament.

Skylar Jackson finished with 13 points for Germantown, while Samantha Marrish added 10 points.

Morgan Wilson scored six points to lead Northville, while Karlie Foster and Charlotte Kalkbrenner each had five points.

Germantown will travel to Fort Edward to face fourth-seeded Fort Ann in the Class D quarterfinals at 6 p.m. on Friday. Fort Ann posted a 57-18 win over 13th-seeded Doane Stuart on Tuesday.

Northville finished its season with a 7-14 overall record.
