Mayfield hands OESJ its first loss, 55-54

ST. JOHNSVILLE – The Mayfield Panthers knocked down nine 3-pointers en route to handing the Western Athletic Conference North Division champion Oppenheim-Ephratah/St. Johnsville Wolves their first loss of the season 55-54 Wednesday night at Oppenheim-Ephratah/St. Johnsville High School.

Mayfield trailed at the half 25-22 before outscoring Oppenheim-Ephratah/St. Johnsville 25-12 in the third quarter and held off a 17-point fourth-quarter surge to pick up the upset victory.

Jay Sweeney led the Panthers’ scoring with 19 points, including two 3-pointers. Brendan Gifford hit three 3-pointers in his 17-point performance for Mayfield (10-9 overall, 8-4 WAC), while Tommy Gates had all 12 of hits points from behind the 3-point arc. Jared Albertin added 11 rebounds for the Panthers.

A.J. Hayes led the Wolfpack (18-1 overall, 11-1 WAC) with 17 points, while Dylan Klock connected for 15 points.

OESJ will face WAC South Division champion Mekeel Christian in the WAC championship game Tuesday at Fulton-Montgomery Community College at 7:30 p.m.

Mayfield, which finished second in the WAC North Division, will face WAC South runner-up Berne-Knox-Westerlo in a crossover game at FMCC on Friday at 7:30 p.m.

Danny Reidell led the Falcons (7-12 overall, 2-9 WAC) with 20 points, while Michael Kalkbrenner chipped in with 11.

Alex Hayes added 17 points for Canajoharie (9-10 overall, 7-5 WAC).

The Hilltoppers led 40-32 after three quarters and held off a late rally by the Golden Eagles.

Ryan DeLaurie finished with 18 points for Fort Plain (11-8 overall, 6-6 WAC).

Quinn Smith scored 16 points to lead Galway (1-11 WAC), while Thor White added 15 points.
