Mayfield skiers compete at state meet

LAKE PLACID – Mayfield’s Emily Cromie finished 22nd overall in the girls 7.5K classic race Monday at the New York State Public High School Athletic Association Nordic Skiing Championships.

Cromie finished the course in a time of 29:04.

It is the third straight state trip to the state meet for Cromie, who finished 27th in the 7.5K classic race in 2015 and 20th in 2014.

Cromie was part of the Section II B team, which finished 12th, in 2015, while finishing 14th as part of the Section II C relay team in 2014.

Mayfield’s Maggy Lambo was 27th with a time of 29:38.8 in her first trip to the state meet.

Saranac Lake’s Jackie Garso won the girls 7.5K classic race with a time of 23:42.7. Old Forge’s Megan Greene (25:44.1) was second and Honeoye Falls-Lima’s Bridget Wangler (26:23.6) was third. New Paltz’s Jordan Nagel (26:37.3) was fourth and Honeoye Falls-Lima’s Gabby Wangler (26:38.9) completed the top five.

Queensbury’s Eliza Blood was Section II’s top finisher, placing 16th with a time of 27:25.3.

Queensbury’s Emily Atamanchuck (28:31.0) was 21st and Queensbury’s Bailey Gengel (29:18.9) was 23rd.

Other Section II finishers included Queensbury’s Anna Manzella (24th, 29:33.0), Queensbury’s Maggie Borgos (25th, 29:34.0), Queensbury’s Alexis Bartlett (25th, 29:34.0), Saratoga Springs’ Sophie Smith (29th, 29:48.1), Shenendehowa’s Meghana Caron (31st, 30:14.9) and Glens Falls’ Sarah Burton (34th, 30:59.6).

In the 10.5K boys race, Mayfield’s Josh Febbie placed 24th overall with a time of 33:05.0, while Mayfield’s Devante Marshall was 32nd with a time of 34:08.4. Febbie was competing in his first state meet.

It was the second straight trip to the state meet for Marshall, who placed 41st in the 10K boys classic race last year. Marshall also was part of the Section II C relay team, which finished 13th last year.

Lake Placid’s Scott Schultz won the 10K boys classic race with a time of 27:52.5.

Nottingham’s Eric Houck (28:16.5) was second overall, while Saranac Lake’s Bruce Hartman (28:23.8) was third. Lake Placid’s Henry McGrew (28:27.8) was fouth and Shenendehowa’s Owen Putman (28:34.5) was fifth.

Two other Section II skiers posted top-10 finishes as Shenendehowa’s Aaron Huneck (29:35.7) was seventh and Queensbury’s Nino Manzella (30:00.6) was ninth.

Other Section II finishers included Brian Beyerbach (11th, 30:21.8), Daniel Manzella (17th, 31:28.1), Johnsburg’s Seamus Tomb (23rd, 32:38.5), Shenendehowa’s David Benson (27th, 33:34.7), Glens Falls’ Willy Herrmann (31st, 34;08.4), Adam Chrzan (34th, 34:44.2) and Saratoga Catholic’s Mikey Halligan (35th, 34:50.7).

The two-day meet concludes today with the relay events.

Alpine Skiing

LAKE PLACID – Saratoga Springs’ Sarah Coombs won the individual title in the slalom competition at the New York State Public High School Athletic Association Alpine Skiing Championships at Whiteface Mountain on Monday.

Coombs finished with a two-run time of 1:31.68.

Roosevelt’s Shiau-Tau Ciecierska (1:33.09) was second, while Webster’s Gigi Vasile (1:35.76) was third. Saranac Lake’s Macy Fischer (1:36.62) was fourth and Emma Willard’s Calynn Cerniglia (1:37.33) was fifth.

Queensbury’s Lexi Metivier (1:44.67) was 20th and Emma Willard’s Annabelle Feist (1:53.45) was 29th.

Shenendehowa’s Tea Trufunovic and Sarah Petro failed to finish the first run, while Emma Willard’s Chloe LoFaro was disqualified in the first run.

Shenendehowa’s Melissa Taggert, Albany Academy’s Samantha McAffer and Saratoga Springs’ Elizabeth McIntyre failed to finish the second run.

Windham-Ashland-Jewett’s Aidan Cohane won the boys race with a two-run total of 1:26.38.

Webster’s Joe Vasile (1:30.26) was second, while Queensbury’s Alex Hohman (1:32.98) was third.

Three other Section II skiers posted top-20 finishes. Lake George-North Warren’s Cooper Perkett (1:41.27) was 13th, Queensbury’s Hunter Montgomery (1:41.42) was 14th and Queensbury’s Mike Guido (1:44.09) was 17th.

Other Section II finishers included Saratoga Springs’ Evan Georgia (25th, 1:50.47) and Saratoga Springs’ Peter Hoffman (36th, 2:06.70).

Shenendehowa’s Evan Scriven and Alex Kruk, and Lake George/North Warren’s Lane Feldeisen failed to complete the first run, while Glens Falls’ Matt Parent failed to finish the second run.

The two-day meet concludes today with the giant slalom event.
