TROY – Justin Houck finished with 16 points to lead top-seeded Berne-Knox-Westerlo to a 49-43 win over ninth-seeded Mayfield in a Section II Class C quarterfinal contest at Hudson Valley Community College on Friday.
Mayfield led 17-14 after one quarter before the Bulldogs rallied to take a 32-26 halftime lead by outscoring the Panthers 18-9 in the second quarter.
Mayfield trimmed its deficit to 38-35 heading into the final quarter before the Bulldogs held on for the win.
Slade Pulliam had 16 points and six rebounds for Berne-Knox-Westerlo, while Mike Flower had 11 rebounds. Zach Hilton added 10 rebounds for the Bulldogs.
Brendan Gifford scored 13 points to lead Mayfield, while Tommy Gates, Jared Albertin and Jay Sweeney each had eight points. Sweeney also grabbed 11 rebounds and had three assists for the Panthers, while Albertin added five rebounds.
Mayfield won six of its last nine games to end the season. All three of the Panthers’ losses came against Berne-Knox-Westerlo.
The Panthers lost 50-34 at home on Jan. 30 and 53-48 in a WAC crossover game at Fulton-Montgomery Community College on Feb. 5.
On Jan. 30, Houck finished with 17 points to lead the Bulldogs, while Hilton added 14 points. Garrett Delaney led Mayfield with 13 points.
In the Feb. 5 meeting, Houck had 16 points to lead BKW, while Pulliam had 15 points. Hilton added 12 points for the Bulldogs.
Delaney paced the Panthers with 16 points and Albertin added 11 points.
Berne-Knox-Westerlo advances to Monday’s semifinals to face fifth-seeded Lake George at the Glens Falls Civic Center at 5 p.m. The Warriors posted a 66-57 win over fourth-seeded Rensselaer on Friday.
Alex Jones scored 20 points to lead Lake George, while Mason Flatley finished with 12 points. Zeke Reynolds added 11 points for the Warriors.
Anthony Carter scored a game-high 11 points to lead Rensselaer, while Kasheim Bandy and C.J. Gil each scored 11 points.
Mayfield finished its season with an 11-11 overall record.
