BROADALBIN – When Broadalbin-Perth and Amsterdam met on Jan. 20 the Rams used a big second-quarter scoring surge to build a big enough lead to hold of Broadalbin-Perth for an 81-75 victory.
Tuesday the teams met again only this time on the Patriots’ home court and again the second quarter became a crucial block in the victory.
After outscoring Amsterdam 15-4 in the first quarter, the Patriots put together a 25-point second quarter to take a 38-19 halftime lead and cruised to a 74-56 Foothills Council victory Tuesday night at Broadalbin-Perth High School.
The Patriots victory was costly to the Rams as they entered the game tied with Scotia-Glenville at the top of the Foothills Council South standings. The loss, coupled with the Tartans’ 73-50 victory over Johnstown, gave Scotia-Glenville the South title and advanced the Tartans to the league championship game against North champions Glens Falls at the Glens Falls Civic Center Thursday night.
“This was a big game for us,” Broadalbin-Perth coach Tucker Gifford said. “Any time we play a school as close to us as Amsterdam, it is big and this has become a good rivalry. The last time we played them it was not a good result for us. Tonight we didn’t have lapses and when we needed a big play, we got one.”
Amsterdam (13-4 overall, 10-3 Foothills) put the first points of the game on the board before the Patriots’ Michael Mann got a hot hand to hit three 3-pointers and a basket for 11 of BP’s 13 first-quarter points to take a 13-4 lead.
Colby Hartz took over the scoring for the Patriots in the second quarter, notching eight points to go with 3-pointers from Mann and Joey Ladipo to outscore the Rams 25-15 in the quarter to take a commanding 19-point halftime lead.
One of the keys to the success was Preston Taylor’s defense on the Rams Kory Bergh, who scored 25 points against the Patriots when the met in January. Taylor held Bergh to two first-half points.
Amsterdam won the third quarter 22-19 with the help of Anthony Aponte’s buzzer-beating 3-pointer but trailed 57-41 heading into the fourth quarter.
Mann continued to have the hot hand for the Patriots as he delivered a pair of long-range bombs in the Patriots 11-2 run to open the fourth quarter and turn back the Rams for the 74-56 win.
Mann, who got the start Tuesday night, connected for seven 3-pointers in his game-high 24-point performance. Vincenzo DiCaterino finished with 16 points and Hartz chipped in with 14.
Taylor, who had 27 points in the first meeting, finished with seven points for the Patriots, who improved to 15-4 overall and 9-4 in Foothills play.
“There were two parts to that [Mann getting the start],” Gifford said. “Mike gave us the early spark we needed and Connor Pingitore came in as the sixth man, which is what Mike has been doing the past couple of weeks. Connor gave us the spark we needed off the bench. Tonight was a total team effort.”
Bergh came on late, hitting a pair of second-half 3-pointers to finish with a team-high 13 points and Tysean Hanna finished with eight.
