Raiders come up short against Herkimer, 63-60

JOHNSTOWN – The Fulton-Montgomery Community College men’s basketball team has given Herkimer College its share of battles in recent years.

The most recent meeting between the teams was no different as the Generals rallied from a 34-30 halftime deficit to post a 63-60 win over the Raiders in a Mountain Valley Conference game at the Raiders’ Den.

FMCC started the attack right out of the gate as it never trailed in the first half. Led by Ayodele Akinmola, the Raiders got off to a 17-5 lead halfway through the first half. Herkimer dominated the final six minutes of the half outscoring the Raiders 14-6, but FMCC was able to maintain the lead 34-30 heading into the locker room. Akinmola led FMCC with 15 first-half points.

The second half started out similar to the first as FMCC ran out to a 45-32 lead, but the Generals scored 12 unanswered points to cut the Raiders lead to just one with 12 minutes remaining.

Barceem Dukes kept the Raiders in the game with multiple rebounds on both end of the court. The next 10 minutes both teams battled basket for basket and Herkimer got its first lead of the game 55-54 with six minutes remaining. Akinmola would put the Raiders ahead for the last time 60-58 with 2:30 remaining in the contest. The Generals would knock down five straight foul shots to go up by three with seven seconds remaining.

FMCC was unable to get a final shot off and Herkimer went on to win 63-60.

Patrick Dorrian scored 13 points to lead Herkimer (17-3 overall, 11-0 MVC), while Justin Harley and Tru Garland each had 11 points. Harley also had 11 rebounds for the Generals, while Anquan McLean added 14 rebounds.

Akinmola led FMCC with a game-high 24 points, while Barceem Dukes had 11 points and 14 rebounds. Dylan O’Connor added 10 points and six rebounds for the Raiders.

FMCC (7-10 overall, 6-10 MVC) is scheduled to travel to Utica to face Mohawk Valley Community College on Saturday at 3 p.m.
