JOHNSTOWN – After one quarter of Saturday’s Western Athletic Conference crossover game, the Fort Plain girls basketball team found itself in control against Schoharie.
The Lady Hilltoppers got 10 first-quarter points from Soren Shirley and five from Kendra Trembley to take a 15-11 lead after eight minutes of play.
However, in the second quarter, Shirley picked up her second foul, sending her to the bench.
With Shirley on the sidelines, Schoharie used a 10-1 run to turn a 20-15 deficit into a 25-21 lead.
“Getting in foul trouble hurt us,” Fort Plain coach Phil Karker said. “When Soren [Shirley] picked up her second foul was when Schoharie made its run in the second quarter.”
The Indians took a 36-28 lead into the half as Desiree Palmatier scored eight points in the second quarter for Schoharie.
The Lady Hilltoppers’ struggles continued in the third quarter as the Indians outscored Fort Plain 11-7.
Shirley picked up her third foul with 3:26 left in the third quarter. The Indians capitalized again to take a 36-28 lead into the fourth quarter.
In the final quarter, Fort Plain closed to within six points, but got no closer as Schoharie pulled away for the victory.
“We’re a Jekyll and Hyde group from minute to minute,” Karker said. “We can look great for a few minutes and then we don’t.”
Palmatier scored 17 points to lead Schoharie, while Alexis Williams added 12 points.
Shirley had a game-high 23 points to lead Fort Plain, while Trembley added 16 points. Both Shirley and Trembley each had four 3-pointers.
Fort Plain has yet to decide whether it will compete in the Section II Class D Tournament. The pairings will be announced Wednesday.
“I don’t know what we’re going to do about sectionals,” Karker said. “Some of them want to go and some don’t, so we’ll see what we’re going to do.”
