Johnson picks up third straight modified win at Fonda Speedway

FONDA – Starting farther back in the field did not hamper Ronnie Johnson or Kenny Gates.

Johnson started 13th in the 35-lap modified feature, while Gates started 11th in the 20-lap pro stock main.

However, the results were the same as Johnson and Gates drove to their third consecutive feature wins, while Josh Coonradt picked up his fourth-straight street stock feature win Saturday night at Fonda Speedway.

Joining them with victories Saturday night were Brian Pessolano in the 602 sportsman and Brian Calabrese won the rookie sportsman feature.

Vinny Sanganetti and Justin Boehler brought the field of 27 modifieds to the green with Sanganetti taking the early lead.

The field went under the red flag after a lap four restart when Darwin Greene got out of shape on the backstretch and was hit by Craig Hanson and both drivers continued on. An accordion effect resulted in Boehler being pushed to the outside of turn three and collecting Brian Gleason. Both cars slid into the tires lining the third turn wall with Gleason hitting the catch fence and ending up on top of Boehler’s modified.

When the race resumed Jessey Mueller and Greene settled in behind Sanganetti with Bodie Bellinger, Hanson, Danny Johnson, Jeremy Wilder and Ronnie Johnson.

Greene made a big move on Sangenetti exiting turn four on lap seven but it opened the bottom line allowing Mueller to dive under both and into the lead.

Mueller steadily pulled away from the field as Ronnie Johnson began to work his way forward and settled into a third-place battle with Bellinger when the yellow flew, erasing Mueller’s three-second lead.

Johnson restarted on the outside of row two, powered his way into the lead and never looked back as he recorded his third win of the season and 28th of his career.

Mueller crossed the line second followed by Wilder, Danny Johnson and Greene. Bellinger placed sixth with Dominick Buffalino seventh, Hanson eighth, Jeff Trombley ninth and Mark Kislowski 10th.

Justin Knight grabbed the early lead in the pro stock main event before Todd Hoffman drove around the outside of turn two to take the point on lap three.

Gates, who was running fifth, benefitted from a lap seven restart to move in behind Hoffman and the two ran side-by-side until Gates pulled ahead on lap 11.

Gates survived a series of restarts with one lap to go to record his third win of the season and 61st of his career.

Hoffman crossed the line second but was later disqualified in post race tech for an engine violation.

Luke Horning moved up to second with Chuck Dumblewski third, Pete Broderson fourth and Tom Denton fifth.

Mark Mortensen paced the caution-marred 25-lap 602 sportsman feature for the opening 20 laps before Pessolano made a strong move to take over the top spot and record his first win of the season and fourth of his career at Fonda Speedway.

Mortensen came home in second followed Dave Constantino, Chad Edwards and Billy Gray. Adam McAuliffe, John McAuliffe, Rocky Warner Ricky Quick and Connor Cleveland completed the top 10.

Joey Wilson set the early pace in the 15-lap street stock feature before relinquishing the lead to Jon Young. Coonradt briefly took the lead only to have Young race back to the front. Rob VanAernam joined Coonradt and Young at the front and took the lead on lap 12 only to have Coonradt make the most of a late-race restart to keep his record perfect on the season at Fonda Speedway.
