FMCC men’s soccer edges Jefferson in double overtime, 2-1

JOHNSTOWN – Justin Estremera scored the game-winning goal in double overtime to lift Fulton-Montgomery Community College to a 2-1 win over Jefferson Community College on Sunday in a Region III men’s soccer contest.

With just a minute remaining in the second overtime, Estremera headed home a corner kick from Justin Marek to give the Raiders the win.

After a scoreless first half, FMCC’s Aiden VanLoan had a near miss from 30 yards out.

Jefferson scored the game’s first goal with 19 minutes remaining when Tim Irwin found the back of the net.

The Raiders answered four minutes later when Hugues Kouassi sent a pass from Marek into the box where Matthew Smrtic headed the ball into the back of the net.

After a scoreless first overtime session, FMCC earned the win when Estremera scored late in the second OT.

Joseph Perez made five saves to earn the win in goal for the Raiders.

FMCC (2-5 overall) is scheduled to host Tompkins Cortland Community College on Wednesday at 4 p.m.

Broome 3, FMCC 0

BINGHAMTON – On Saturday, FMCC dropped a 3-0 decision at SUNY Broome.

Both teams failed to score in the first half before the Hornets netted three unanswered goals in the second half to earn the victory.

Mark Lee scored the opening goal for Broome on an assist from Luke Day in the 53rd minute.

The Hornets added to their lead in the 58th minute when Lee converted a penalty kick.

Broome closed out the scoring when Lisberto Calvo scored on an assist from Samuel Hill in the 63rd minute.

Tyler Elliott made five saves to post the shutout win in goal for the Hornets, who improved to 8-0 on the season. It was the fifth shutout of the season for Broome.

Perez made seven saves for FMCC.
