Askew, Knack, Trembley named Section II Division 2 all-stars

Three area swimmers were among those named to the 2016-17 Section II Division 2 all-star team.

Fonda-Johnstown’s Trevor Askew, Amsterdam’s Thomas Knack and Canajoharie-Fort Plain’s Joe Trembley all were named all-stars.

Askew was named to the first team, while Knack and Trembley were named to the second team.

At the Section II Division 2 Championshiips on Feb. 18 at Shenendehowa High School, Askew won the 200-yard individual medley with a time of 1:55.63 and he was second in the 100-yard breaststroke with a time of 59.73. He qualified for the state meet in both events and also set new school records in both. His time in the 200 individual medley, eclipsed the old score record of 1:55.75 set by Tomas Martinek in 2001. His time in the 100 breaststroke topped Martinek’s mark of 59.59, set in 2001.

Knack was fifth in the 200 individual medley with a time of 2:04.19 at the Section II Division 2 Championships, while also placing third in the 100 breaststroke with a time of 1:02.60.

Trembley placed fourth in the 50 freestyle at the Section II Division 2 Championships with a time of 22.15 seconds and third in the 100 freestyle with a time of 49.00 seconds.

In addition to his Section II honors, Askew also was named a first-team Foothills Council all-star in the 200-yard individual medley and 100-yard breaststroke.

Askew finished 30th overall in the finals for the 200-yard individual medley March 4 at the New York State Public High School Athletic Association Boys Swimming and Diving Championships at the Nassau County Aquatic Center.

Askew finished with a time of 2:00.75, which placed him 20th among NYSPHSAA swimmers and 30th in the Federation standings.

Askew posted a time of 1:58.51 to place 23rd in the preliminaries Friday to earn a spot in the C (bonus) final. He was seeded ninth in the event.

It was the second straight trip to the state meet for Askew, who qualified in the 200-yard individual medley last year.

In his first trip to the state meet, Askew placed 42nd in the event as a junior with a time of 2:02.23.

Askew also competed in the 500 freestyle, posting time of 4:51.21 to place 36th in the preliminaries at the state championships. The time did not advance him to the finals. He was seeded 43rd in the event.

In addition to the 200 individual medley and 500 freestyle, Askew also qualified in the 100 breaststroke, but opted not to compete in the event at states.

Knack was named a second-team Foothills Council all-star in the 200 individual medley and 100 breaststroke.

Askew also was part of the 200 medley relay team and 400 freestyle relays teams that earned honorable-mention status.

Askew was joined by Kaleb Sluti, Kaden Sluti and Jacob Petrie in the 200 medley relay, and Kaden Sluti, Kaleb Sluti and Tyler Benton in the 400 freestyle relay.

Trembley, a junior, competed in the 50 freestyle at the state meet, placing 36th in the preliminaries with a time of 22.11 seconds. Trembley failed to advance to the finals. He was seeded 45th in the event.

It was Trembley’s first trip to the state meet. He is the first Canajoharie-Fort Plain swimmer to qualify for the state meet since Mark Hanifin accomplished the feat in 2010.

Queensbury’s Ethan Ballard was named Division 2 Athlete of the Year, while Albany Academy’s Scott Young was named Division 2 Coach of the Year.

Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake had Ryan Board and Liam Picozzi named first-team all-stars, while Albany Academy’s Bryce Henkel and Tucker Besch also earned first-team honors.

Rounding out the Division 2 first-team selections were Christian Brothers Academy’s Timothy Maggs, Ravena-Coeymans-Selkirk’s Jordan Harris and Glens Falls’ Matt Parent.

In addition to its first-team honorees, Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake also had Brandon Bardin, Alex Turczyn and Jacob Hurteau named second-team all-stars.

Albany Academy’s Kyle Verstandig, Reginald Anadio and Alexander Loupessis were selected to the second team, along with Queensbury’s David Walton.

In Division I, Saratoga Springs’ Zac Zwijacz was named Athlete of the Year, while Bethlehem’s Bull Dergosits was named Coach of the Year.

Shenendehowa had Joey Homan, Adam Kogan and Nick Lydon named Division I first-team all-stars.

Rounding out the first-team selections in Division I were Ballston Spa’s Clayton Bennice, Niskayuna’s Neil Horne, Guilderland/Voorheesville’s Joseph Gravino, Bethlehem’s Brendan Cartwright and Shaker’s Steve Yu.

In addition to its three first-team honorees, Shenendehowa had Kaleb Hotaling, Jackson Homan, Nick Salzone and Josh Tsai were named to the second team.

Completing the Division I second-team all-stars were Bethlehem’s Connor Doyle, Ballston Spa’s Tanner Damico, Niskayuna’s Bryan Liu, Shaker’s Ian McElrath and Niskayuna’s Matthew Chao.
