Braves claim share of WAC Hudson division title

FONDA —The Fonda-Fultonville Braves made their return to the Western Athletic Conference a triumphant one.

Playing their final regular-season game of the year, the Braves routed Middleburgh 27-0 Thursday at Fonda-Fultonville High School to earn a share of the Hudson Division baseball title with Canajoharie.

“We had a really young team and I said before the season that I thought we were going to get better as the season progressed; and we did,” Fonda-Fultonville coach Rick Palumbo said. “The last four or five games we have played decent baseball. Winning the division title is nice. I wanted seniors Dan Parslow, Jackson Simpson and Christian Cary to go out being a part of something. At least we have that they can hang their hats on. Now we hope we can make some noise in sectionals.”

The Braves and Cougars both finished with 9-4 league records, while Fort Plain ended Notre Dame-Bishop Gibbons’ hope for a three-way tie for the Hudson title with a 4-2 victory Thursday. With the win, Fort Plain shares the Mohawk Division title with Galway.

Fonda-Fultonville took control of Thursday’s game against winless Middleburgh in the first inning, sending 10 batters to the plate and capitalized on three errors in the inning to put six runs on the board. They backed it up with a nine-run second inning and cruised to their ninth win of the season.

Parslow went 4-for-5 in the game with four singles, four RBIs and three stolen bases. Cade Kearns had a double, single and an RBI, while Simpson had three singles and a double and DiCaprio added three singles and three stolen bases.

Fonda-Fultonville will find out their first-round opponent in the Section II Class B tournament after Tuesday’s seeding meeting.
