Fort Plain blanks Salem in Class D quarterfinals, 5-0

FORT PLAIN — Fort Plain used a three-run fifth inning to post a 5-0 victory over eighth-seeded Salem in a first-round Section II Class D baseball tournament game Friday.

The game was halted by weather Thursday in the fourth inning with the top-seeded Hilltoppers leading 1-0.

In the fifth inning, Jaxson Yacowenia would score on Drew Fureno’s RBI single. Troy Butler reached base with a single and Brady Fureno drive in Drew Fureno with a groundout RBI. Butler scored on a wild pitch to give Fort Plain a 4-0 advantage. The Hilltoppers closed out the scoring with a single run in the sixth inning

Drew Fureno had a single, RBI, two runs scored and a stolen base for Fort Plain, while Butler finished with a single, RBI and a run scored. John Cortese had a single for the Hilltoppers, and Zach Reid, Dawson Nare and Yacowenia all had singles.

Cortese, Drew Fureno and Yacowenia combined on a three-hitter for Fort Plain.

Nate Holmes, Andrew Gilbert, Cole Gregg all had singles for Salem.

Fort Plain (15-2 overall) is scheduled to face fourth-seeded Germantown in today’s semifinals at East Field in Glens Falls. The Clippers posted a 10-0 victory over fifth-seeded New Lebanon in the quarterfinals Thursday.

Second-seeded Fort Ann will face third-seeded Whitehall in the other semifinal game at East Field at 1 p.m. Whitehall routed sixth-seeded Doane Stuart in the quarterfinals Thursday, while Fort Ann notched a 15-3 victory over seventh-seeded North Warren.
